Hello colleagues, last night I had an auction of old Roman coins on an online sales website.
The price was good and I was determined to win it and buy it for the highest bidder. Only one thing stopped it: my lack of confidence in the quality.
The coins are definitely all genuine - I have no doubt about that. It was only the coincidence that they all have the same patina that convinced me not to buy this lot.
How is it possible that all the coins in the lot have the same desert patina. Like through a photocopier.
That probability is ruled out.
My explanation is that the coins come from the Balkan Factory where genuine coins from the find are put into large washing machines and washed down to pure copper and bronze. They are then dried and a desert patina is applied which is removed from the raised reliefs with a napkin.
What is your opinion? I didn't buy it at the last minute, but the seller moved it back two weeks.
