Hello guys I just want to ask is, I know Chop Mark coins It considered damage, but I have one collector frend  saying that is the only damage coin that might increase the value of the coin instead of decreasing

Of course this is highly depending on the person but it seems that a lot of people do like coins and would pay a premium on it just want your guys opinion on this?

And do you guys think in the future NGC and PCGS will grade the coins (1 to 70 chop mark) rather saying detailed instead

Hi Darwln.  Are you referring to Trade Dollars in particular?  If so, I believe that PCGS and CACG are the only 2 big TPG's that will straight grade them.  That's assuming that the Chop Marked Trade Dollars don't have any additional damage that would warrant a Details grade.

Here's an example of a Chop Marked Trade Dollar that PCGS straight graded (no Details grade given):

Chop marks are damage but depending on who you talk to, it's considered acceptable. They are the equivalent of private countermarks and their allure is they show obvious proof of circulation. In the case of US Trade dollars, mainly in China.

Some collectors (like myself) are drawn to the more interesting story they can tell compared to coins without chops.

I can speak for Trades and say if they're straight graded with PCGS or CACG, they will sell for more versus a problem coin equivalent (i.e. cleaned, environmental damage, bent, etc.). However, chopped examples usually do not sell for as much as un-chopped straight graded coins. There are more collectors out there who prefer the latter over the former.

Its a rather recent change all my Chinese Silver dragons with chopmarks are graded in detaik grades but like many says chopmarks often adds to the value if the chopmarks arent invasive or extreme

Hi Terrazone.  I may not have done a thorough job explaining this, so I just wanted to add some context and clarify that U.S. Trade dollars are considered a special case and that other chopmarked coins are rarely supported (for straight grading) by the 3 big TPG's.  That's why I very carefully scoped the conversation down to just U.S. Trade Dollars.  For other chopmarked coins, I would highly recommend that you contact the TPG directly and ask them what their policy is.  But you're probably going to find out that the grading policy for those coins still involves assigning them a Details grade.
