Hi all, I'm new here -but I'm old in Joliet, Illinois U.S.
Anybody else here collect the Kookaburra series stuff from the Perth Mint?
I'm so confused sometimes…

Paul Marquardt

Wow!
NOBODY here?

Paul Marquardt

It seems so, at least 30 odd people who saw this thread. But you could also be a bit more precise for example in what you find so confusing, to get better engagement even with non specialised collectors.

mark on the list even shows who wants to swap them.

Your post does not have any question that requires response. You are just confused.

It is 8 PM down there. Only roes react in 30 minutes.

I see.
I was hoping to find someone wanting to engage because I have a few questions, and didn't want to rapid-fire them.
My first point of confusion is;
Which one of these two designs is the “proof” issue, and which is the non-proof for the first year.
Thanks

P.S.
My second post was 11 days after my first post, and I don't know what “roes” means.

Paul Marquardt

Cangarooes are crazy mammals common down there.

See level of details and packaging on proof variant and compare it with your coin.

Or read https://www.gainesvillecoins.com/blog/what-is-a-proof-coin

See now -one link shows one design and calls it proof, the other link shows the other design and calls it proof.

Paul Marquardt

The coin in the first link doesn't look like a proof coin. Look at the difference (frosting - no frosting):

Besides, Krause says the 1990 with the Kookaburra sitting on a branch is always proof, the 1990 with the Kookaburra sitting on a trunk never is proof:

In Australia we don't call them Roes .. they are Roos. Here is a picture of one sitting on my front lawn at my previous house. My two cats were watching him very closely. Yes we do get them in suburbia, this was 15 kilometres from the centre of the City of Brisbane.

The coin on the top N# 22330 was issued in 1990 as a Proof coin. It was also issued in 1991 in Specimen BU finish.

The coin on the bottom N# 20585 is the 1990 Specimen BU issue. It was also issued in 1991 in Proof finish.

Just to confuse things both of the coins were also issued in BU finish at various coin shows in 1990 & 1991.

Here is an excerpt from the Greg McDonald catalogue regarding the coin. Try to figure out what was actually issued and when from that?

Apologies for not answering sooner, I have been moving house and have not had a chance to look at the Forum for a few days.

Thanks Professor and Mike, for that great information and explanation.

I'm trying to complete my collection to date, and have had a hard time understanding the first two years of issue.

It seems that the depiction of the Kook on a stump would be the correct one to place in the 1990 spot.

Paul Marquardt

Lovely collection!

World coins by date and mint place, 1850-2000

Thanks Tony,
I think the Kooks are a cool line.
This is presentation case 1 of 2.
I also have this nice “Honor Mark” set, and a couple of the Gilded Editions with the Kookaburra gold-plated pin.
The Gilded line is another source of confusion for me.
