Hello ,

I recently got a few silver and brass UK three pence for my collection and it got me wondering -

How long did these two coins , different in every way , circulate side by side . I know that the silver 3 pence stopped production in 1945 , but when were they withdrawn from circulation?Did they stay in circulation  until decimalization in 1971  or where they withdrawn earlier ?

I have tried to find an answer , but have been unsuccessful , and I hope that you can help me .

It seems silver 3-pence coins were more popular in Scotland than in England.

They were last minted in 1941 but were officially demonetised in 1971 although they were never seen in circulation from around 1945 onwards

Don't forget about the Maundy silver threepence (and the one, two and four pence), which are still being issued and are legal tender.

Just because you can't see it ... doesn't mean it isn't there - Anon.

But don’t and haven’t (barring earlier issues when the design was the same, and when they were used as intended by the poor) ever circulated. I have a big problem with these coins now and what they stand for now, at first it was nice, poor people receiving gift from royal family, now it is just pointless - not sure if the poorest even receive them now, and if they do might be reluctant to cash in on them as they are a gift. It would have been better if these coins continued as same design as circulating coins, increased issues (with population), increased with inflation, changed to notes, changed to bank deposit and so on, and actually helped the 20% of people living under the poverty line in the UK. Now they are just pointless, who wants a silver 4pence which at that value can’t even by you a sweet, is worth like a pound in silver, but more to coin collectors. They mights as well just give people a 10 pound note, then at least they can buy some food, alcohol or drugs with it 😂
