Hi all,

I have recently added  a coin collection I inherited from my late father.  I would like to try and improve the collection, it covers a lot of countries, and has lots of duplicates.  I am just not sure how to start, I am nervous about swapping incase I have graded incorrectly or identified the coin incorrectly - some variations are very complex.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You don't have to grade your coins if you're not sure about it. Just take pictures or scans of the coins somebody ask for a swap. Then the swapper can see for himself what grade it is or if something is incorrectly identified. That way you don't have to be nervous about that. Good luck swapping.

Ok, thank you, good idea.

Hi Also check the numista catalog to see if really duplicates are there or are they varities. When I was a newbie I could not make out the difference between the heads  and swapped a few non duplicates in case of UK, Netherlands etc

yes, thank you, so many variations!!

They may not be duplicates.  Study before getting rid of anything.  I'm a VAMmer with over 200 coins of the same denomination, year and mint mark.  Each one is different.  Many were struck from the variety of over 70 die sets.

Good luck and have fun.

A smart man learns from his mistakes.  A smarter man learns from someone else's.

Had to look up what VAM is -
