Hello!
I’m asking for help in identifying a possible error coin.
I have two British One Penny coins from the reign of George VI:
- One is dated 1940, the other 1944.
- Both have the standard reverse design with Britannia holding a trident.
- However, one of them is noticeably thinner, which can be seen in the attached photos.
- The diameter appears to be the same, but the thinner coin feels and looks lighter and sounds duller when dropped.
- The comparison is shown in the side view and obverse photos.
I’m wondering:
- Could this be a minting error (e.g. wrong planchet, weak strike, incorrect metal)?
- Or is it more likely due to corrosion or wear?
- Does such a coin have any numismatic value?
Let me know if you’d like to add or adjust anything!
