Hello,

I'm looking to add the extensive set of national banknotes to Numista, including all issuing banks. Creating new pages for all of these seems like overkill, so I thought I'd add individual lines within a page (which also seems like a lot). What would the community prefer? There's also the option of just having users type the name in the comments, but I know I personally would want to have an option specifically for my variety of banknote. Let's brainstorm as to what's best for this high-volume situation

100/255 self-designated type coins

97/161 circulating
3/36 commemorative
0/7 pattern
0/17 non-mint
0/37 territorial

Had to look up what you meant by “national banknotes” … as every country tends to have national banknotes. But I guess you mean the notes issued by national banks in the US.

No idea how many pages you're talking about or how different they all are, but read up on the guidelines, because that's what the community tends to follow :-)

Also no idea how they are already listed in the catalogue : these? Banknotes – Numista

No new swaps for the moment, still too many half-ongoing swaps to clean up!

Can you give us an example of one or two that are not already in the catalog that you intend to add?  What has the referee said about your planned additions?

It seems that the 1865 series and 1875 series are missing from Numista, https://nationalcurrencyvalues.com/original-series/1-dollar-bill-1865-value.aspx is a nice website to learn about these specific banknotes. Since there's such. high volume of chartered issuers, I think it's just best to be generic when I add the missing examples.

I would not attempt such an ambitious project without discussing it with the referee first. And as  BramVB said, read the Guidelines if you haven't.

I can see some in the catalogue without distinction between the issuing entities, which means you would not even find them if searching by the name of the bank.

Series of 1902 – Numista

Series of 1882 – Numista

This situation without mentioning the bank is not ideal, but I understand than adding thousands of separate pages (per issuing authority) is also a bit much. Time to call on the referee … @titus17

I don't like to reinvent the wheel, so I would suggest using a similar format to what Kelly uses in his guide “National Banknotes by Kelly 6th edition." For anyone not familiar with it, he lists all the types of notes known to exist by Charter Number and bank name. BTW this would potentially mean the creation of over 5000 new pages.

There are 5000 different note designs? They look more like a few designs and each bank just got a specific number stamp and maybe a bank name on it (Wiki). No ground for separate pages.

They seem similar to the old National Bank issues of Japan. There are a couple of denominations and 100+ bank branches (not all branches issued every note). The branches get listed in the year lines and I think this sufficient.

If you are searching for notes of a specific branch the charter number and or bank name should be put in the year line comments so a search can find it.

Edit: okay I read there a 10K different branches and this would seem ridiculous to add 😅.

The general design seems to be the same indeed, but if you look al the (random) six notes that appear on this page (maybe refresh once or twice to get some more) you'll see that the design of the bank name had different shapes and fonts.

I seem to notice there are also different signature combinations, so I don't know how many potential yearlines we would get if all combinations of bank and signatures get combined?

As Idolenz mentioned, there are thousands of charter note designs spanning multiple years. I had discussions with other referees in the past and it was not deemed practical to catalogue them all as separate varieties, let alone pages. However, major design features and signature combinations are still listed separately on each page. Here's an example: N#274743
