Hi all

I am looking to start cataloguing and grading my European and Commonwealth collections. I have almost finished my British stuff. I found D F  Allen's .. the standard guid to grading British coins.. most helpful. I liked the pictures of examples. My question is… do similar books, webpages etc exist for my next projects, unfortunately I only read English .

Hello —

My first reaction was to go to the Literature section and search for grading:

https://en.numista.com/literature/index.php?r=grading&t=&a=&c=

As you can see from the results, it's mostly for American coins.

so far I've tracked down

Australian coins  from TDK  APDC coin website     and https://www.saskatooncoinclub.ca/articles/12_grading_canadian_coins-ver2.html    for Canada , I've also started  using     https://www.coins-of-the-uk.co.uk/pics/ones2.html        for uk pics.

thanks for the link you highlighted . I'm more interested in online free access stuff in a similar vain to Allens book that i have bought. the Canada one looks good for flashy George sitting down so transposable ( grade naming headache aside) across the commonwealth, ill keep on looking for obverse s  that are country specific… i.e... 3 pearls on right go first etc

I have found that the basis principles of grading carry for all coins, as a guide I find an image of an uncirculated example and then compare the coin I have. With British empire coins the portrait is similar on all issues so you will find that the principles are basically the same, with the reverse of the coin compare it with an uncirculated example which will give you a good indication of what grade your coin is. Clear as mud I know but it has served me well in over 60 years of collecting.

hi , thanks for the response, it dose seem to be a common scene approach , what i was hoping for is along the line of ( I've just this minute finished my French 3rd republic stuff) fine crease/fold  on left leg running from hip down to right is clear in xf and above….that's what I surmised but having only done  a hundred or so i might be too harsh or even lenient . hooks to hang my slightly worn but brim intact hat too.

cheers

I tend to be quite harsh on grading, but it’s not a bad thing
