hello, my son is disabled and we finally got him interested in a hobby…coin collecting.

can anyone give us some tips on what to look for on the coins when looking for errors?

Thanks

Sean

Obviously depends on the type of coin, but this is a good overview of errors:

I have to ask, why collect only for errors?  Would be much more interesting to collect coins for coins.

Welcome to Numista to you and your son!

Welcome. Is he interested in US coins or foreign coins. Or both, I can get a box together for him free. If you like.

It is, what it is, or is it.

Hello Sean,

Welcome to Numista.

As ‘ALLRED1950’ said, you can get coins from him for your son. Also, you may can buy world coin lots (100 coins pack or 1kg pack) and your son can start going through them, try to identify each coin information like what country it's from, which year, denomination, etc. Step by step he can catalogue them here in numista. This how I started coin collection, and I love this hobby.

Pramod

If he's interested in US coins just get rolls from the bank in whatever denominations his interests lie. What he doesn't use can just be returned to the bank and exchanged  Also - how is he storing them,? 2x2 coin holders are cheap and they make notebook pages to put them in. Albums and folders are also available.

Welcome to the greatest hobby of them all, I began collecting when I was eight in 1963 and was hooked from the start, at first I found an Irish free state penny in my change and saved it, soon I was looking for all the different pennies in circulation from Victoria up to Elizabeth II. My brother joined the army and began getting me coins from his postings overseas, to add to my UK collection, in 1968 the UK issued its very first decimal coins and I vowed to collect every decimal coin that was released for circulation or could be used in circulatio. I am now 70 and still as keen a collector as I was In 1963, I hope your son enjoys the hobby as much as I have over the years.
