Whilst cataloging artifacts for a small local museum, I came across this gem.  I believe the material is vulcanized rubber.

After Charles Goodyear, Daniel Hodgman was an early pioneer in the 19th century rubber industry.

I put the date at about 1875. By 1878, the business was known as ‘ Hodgman & Co.' In 1885, it was called ‘ Hodgman Rubber Co.'

I came across an 1872 NY Times article in which a porter for D. Hodgman was arrested for selling  ‘obscene’ material. Quite interesting historically, but I don't care to speculate regarding details.
