Hi all,
Just wanted to share that I've been working on a Wordpress blog to slowly publish my research on late modern Korean coinage, with a focus on the historical contexts and implications of the coins.
I've always felt that this area has been very under-researched; for instance, most papers on the topic echo colonialist narratives that the downfall of the Korean Empire in 1910 was a self-induced calamity. What began as a COVID lockdown passion project has ballooned into a larger body of research that I'm excited to share with the community.
You can find my work, Coinage in Late Modern Korea, on my blog here:
https://arirangnumismatics.wordpress.com/
There are three main volumes to my research.
- A contextual Historical Analysis that relies on contemporary primary documents and correspondences
- A coin-by-coin Numismatic Analysis, including variety analysis
- An Appendix with charts, tables and translations, including a groundbreaking translation of an 1896 Mint Report that details the Incheon Mint's inventory, production process, die workshop and more
In the near future, I’ll also be inviting a few collector friends to contribute posts covering topics like modern world and ancient Greek coins.
Thanks for your interest, and feel free to reach out if you have any questions on these coins.
