Mint error?

looks like some kind of issue with the die? Can’t find anything else like it. Any insight on what happened here?

Hello. That is what we call a PMD coin.  Post Mint Damage  It was damaged after being released into circulation. It lowers the value.

fjjohnson' reply is probably right, but I wonder whether it could be a defective planchet? I don't see how the V shape in the lower shoulder can be obtained by a hit with some metallic object, not the missing metal at LIBERTY. It might be bad lamination at least in that area and up.

Was the reverse flattened at all? That's what one expects if the coin was hit with some metallic object. A picture would help.
