I am wondering how the bigger collectors store their coins. I have a relatively small collection and I currently store them using the 2 x 2 coin holders and the plastic folder pages.
I just would like to know if there is a better / smarter way to store the collection, especially bigger collections.

I don't have much of a collection, but I like the 2x2 cardboard "flips" and the binder pages. My local dealer sells the pages for $0.75 and the flips for $0.03 each, so a page of coins costs me $1.35 in supplies. Plus, it's a nice way to view the coins and the thicker plastic is more protection verse the the thin mylar on the flips.
I guess it depends on whether you want to just store the coins, or view the coins.
For strickly storage purposes, their are boxes custom made to store flips. You could use any box, I supposed, but the custom boxes have channels that are the right size for flips. One of the downsides, besides easy viewing, is that the mylar flips don't offer much protection. With loose storage, I worry about exposed the staples puncturing the mylar and damaging a coin.
Another option for large storage capacity is don't put them in flips, but get "coin tubes". These are pastic tubes in various diameter for storing coins. If you're collecting various foriegn coins, this would probably require you to sort the coins by size, rather than country or date. Another downside is there is no protection on individual coins.
Perhaps the best solution is to put the coins you really like in binder pages, the coins you sort of like in flip boxes, and the more common, highly circulated ones in tubes...
Hi Andre
I started keeping my coins in plastic pages in an album.
As my collection increased the binders became heavier, so I made a cabinet which holds more than 1000 coins.
The sides of the cabinet have grooves and each 'shelf' made of 3mm MDF which slides in the groove.
To prevent the coins slipping I cut a mat to fit on the shelf. The mat can be obtained from a kitchen shop or hardware dealer.
Now it is very easy to see any coin and add another one.
Hope this helps. Keith
