New to Numismatics I have gone down the rabbit hole. I started stacking silver and came across these coins trying to determine if they are real or fake. Since they've been in the family for awhile how would you determine if they are any good and would I be wasting my time getting it evaluated.
here is the first coin
I've added it to my collection not sure what grade to give
yes rudiment measurements are correct have not weighed as kitchen scale not that accurate and it also has plastic covering. Guess going to have to break open to see as it is sealed with two other farthing coins
To be correct the coin is from Transvaal as they were issued by the boers during the boer war, there are a lot of defaced trench art variations made by British soldiers to lampoon Kruger, the comple set is from one penny to one crown all with the same obverse and a similar reverse apart from the denomination. The ZAR stand for Zuid afrikanshe republic.

Thanks for that bit of info wished I new about this when I was at school learning about the boer war would have made it more interesting. I have another coin which I am having difficulty with. I have a 1862 farthing, everything lines up with the catalogue but the face value is a penny. I remember my parents talking about penny farthings were these terms interchangeable. PS this coin is also from South Africa "family heirlooms" would there be a mint mark on the coin

With the exception of the gold 1 Pound coins, all ZAR coins were all issued before the Boer War.
