I got a beautiful gift this year from my grandmother and I was curious what the serial number represented on the insert. They didn’t mint that many coins, so what could it mean?

I have no idea but cool gift!

Yes!  I’m very grateful. It belonged to her aunt who had a consignment shop in Kentucky.

As it is a slightly lighter colour, maybe the 84 at the

start could be the year [on the 1884 reproduction] and

the 195346 the serial number - though still quite high.

There were 3 million to be sold >

‘Because silver certificates used to be redeemable for silver dollars,

the Treasury kept large quantities of silver dollars on hand. However,

the end of the era of silver dollar distribution, the Treasury realized that they

still had three million silver dollars on hand, mostly struck at the former

mint in Carson City, Nevada.

Between 1972 and 1974, most of the dollars were

liquidated by the General Services Administration through a mail bid system.

However, some of the coins that remained were sold in several final sales in 1980’.

The first 2 digits indicate the year of the included coin.

Interesting!!! I guess they don’t specify which years were among the nearly million coins found. I suppose the serial number must be among different year mints.
