It concerns a quantity of gold coins originating from my great-grandparents during the harsh times before WWI and WWII.

Although they hold very great sentimental value, I am possibly considering a sale.

This would be the case only if the appraisal is not limited solely to the intrinsic gold value of the coins, but also takes their historical value into account.

any thoughts what the worth may be?

thanks

Where to start?

It would help if you did the photos horizontally, so we don't have to twist our necks in the process. If these are real then you have a good 5 figure sum there. Most sovereigns are worth melt only, but there are some rare dates and varieties.

However its hard to tell if they are real or worthless modern fakes, of which there are many from China, some better photos and more descriptions would help.

I love coins. Especially silver, gold and anything really old.

Thanks for taking your time to reply.

I’m 10000% sure these are genuine as my belated mother guarded them for her whole life. The coins can be checked anytime.

would you be willing to inform me which are worthy to give detailed pictures of? I presume the young head and the jubilee heads?

I would take the time to add all the coins to your collection.  You'll learn more about them in the process, and once you're done you can navigate the listings to see if any have outstanding value above bullion.

Also, please go back and rotate your original pictures.

Maybe I'm being real stupid but about half of these years don't actually exist?

I don't know much about them, but looks like the dates are covered if they're Australian?

How do you tell the difference between UK and AUS coins?

Ah yes. I was being stupid. The mint mark will be different. I'll have to check them. Thanks!

I was using the new Denomination/Currency search function with Pound sterling currency. Australia didn't use that currency so didn't show up.

Looks like most, but not all of them are South African.

Good afternoon,

Gold Vreneli coins are currently being bought for around CHF 677 and sold for around CHF 718 in Switzerland. These are the daily prices quoted by a regional bank (https://boerse.raiffeisen.ch/edelmetalle).

Australia minted gold sovs and halves until 1931, South Africa until 1932. Mint marks are on the rock below St George and the Dragon for this type.

S = Sydney

P = Perth

M = Melbourne

SA = Pretoria (South Africa)

I = Bombay India (WW1 only)

C = Ottawa, Canada - a few 1910s dates only

No mintmark is the UK (Tower Hill) but they only minted sovereigns until 1915 and then there was a one off issue in 1925.

I love coins. Especially silver, gold and anything really old.
