I found this today after digging through the night. Can anyone identify what it is? I'm qr mile from ft early. I'm betting it's 1800s….

Hello and welcome to Numista!

There seems to be nothing recognizable on this piece of metal. If you see some traces of a design, do let us know.

However, I think I see some rust. If I'm right, this is probably not a coin at all but some iron object.

My best guess is a USA 1943 steel penny.

If this was my coin, I would try to clean it.

Soaking it in water or olive oil is a fairly uncontroversial step. After a few days you could see if any of the encrustations have gotten loose. I use a soft toothbrush and a wooden toothpick to gently scrape. If your coin is very valuable then this could leave permanent scratches and reduce the value, but as the FAQ on another site so wonderfully says, your coin is probably not rare because rare coins are … rare.

Maybe that will expose enough to identify it.

If you want to go further, the next step is to identify the metal.

If it's silver, this guy has an impressive collection of chemistry based techniques that he has experimented with.

For other metals you'll have to research more. I've seen interesting posts in detecting forums

A quick note on photographing coins.

1) hold the phone steady, I use a cheap folding phone holder that rotates to horizontal

2) If you get too close the picture will be blurry

3) Side lighting helps show raised areas, different angles will show different features

3) crop the picture

Oh yeah, post the weight and diameter
