I just ran across my first Vatican City coin and it's peeked my interest in starting a collection of said coinage. Is it realistic to aim towards such a collection - and how difficult is it going to be to assemble a complete collection?

Thank you kindly

Well on the one hand, the coins are usually pretty cheap, although there are some pretty high value ones; on the other hand they're pretty low mintage, so it might be pretty hard to track down all of them. Good luck though, I've started a little collection of them and I've got about 20 or so different ones. I think I've got one or two in my swaps too.
It's "piqued" not peeked.  :o
Anyway, the Numista catalogue lists 364 Vatican City coins, so there are many to choose from. The Sede Vacante coins are favorites and quite sought after.
I have a bunch of the Popes. These are among my favorites coins to collect. ;)

Yeah I love those, I have the 1930 5 Lire

And don't forget those in Italian States as Papal States.

I love these low mintage coins !
But most of them are hard to get and prices are (much) higher than mentioned in Krause.
Collecting them a 'few' years now, I now got 134 coins from Vatican City.
With special thanks to friend Enrico from Rome.

I just love these coins (and the ones from San Marino !), but it will be very difficult and expensive to obtain a full set ! Because of the low mintage and they're non circulated coins.
And a couple of them catalogue close to $1000
Then my friends I am set to at least try to obtain a respectable set if these coins beware I am on the hunt to bad I did not have this passion when I traded out my very first Vatican coin
