Hi all

Does everyone know about these 50p coins?? I've never seen one before!!

http://www.itv.com/news/london/2014-02-20/money-coin/

John  :)
I used to be indecisive but now i'm not so sure!!
Yes...big news recently. I have a couple. Scarce as hens teeth!
Yeah I have 1.. Others I would say are just as scarce to me at least are the suffragette 50p and the King James Bible £2 pieces !
There are only two types of the new smaller 50 Pence that I keep when found in pocket change
(and do not enter on my exchange list - so will not sell or swap); that Kew Gardens one and
the Give Women The Vote (Suffragettes Movement) one ...

https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces19436.html I have 2 of
https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces19435.html I have 6 of

Most other smaller (1997+) commemorative 50 Pence I have quite a few of, especially 2005 year.
I think on the Royal Mint site there is a list of the mintage figures. Yes - here it is ...

So from there here are commemorative 50 Pence mintages in year order.

WOW!!

I have a few of the Olympic ones but didn't realise there were some that were so rare!!  :o

I have a few of the mono coloured £2 pieces too  ;)

Thanks for the replies!!

There's much to learn even just about our own (British) coinage  :snif:

Cheers, John  :)

I have a Kew gardens 50p too. The prices on ebay for the at the moment are ridiculous!!
Telford, Shropshire, United Kingdom.
I had a friend working in London watch out for cc pieces...she had her own till and quite liked the hunt...anyway she found me Kew Gardens as well as a King James Bible 2 pound coin...I felt quite lucky!
I got one in my change the other week. I spent it cos I don't collect modern coins. Oopsy.

I never used to until the thought dawned on me that clearly people had and spent gothic florins and all of the stuff  collectors go mad for today. So it stands to reason that one day these coins will be desirable !
It reminds me of the situation with Russia's Chechnya coin... although the Mint seems right on board with endorsing this coin as ultra-rare. Maybe the director has a few hundred socked away somewhere...
That's my theory on that too, creating a false scarcity. In my eyes its a ploy to make the rest of the population get interested in collecting some of the dross they pump out ! It will stop the real collectors getting them.
And this make people like us want to buy them from the mint !
Pleased to say I also have 2 of these 1 in vf/xf and 1 in proof (possibly silver).  :)  :)
I bought mine on eBay some years ago....If anyone is mad enough to want to pay me £20 each I will happily sell them to you for that price....Thinks....Perhaps I had better check what they are selling on eBay for, and perhaps sell them.....

A screenshot taken just now, of the three at the top of the current list -
they sold (unchanged prices) for £27.00 and £29.99 and £40.00  8)

Also, on the current 'completed listings' page, there are a few where the seller has listed with an opening price of £50 and have received a winning bid. There is another with one winning bid of £60, and one in a sealed Royal Mint pack which sold for £107 with 10 bids.  :8D

OMG!

Talk about silly money. But there are over 100 pages of these on sale!

I've just listed one as an auction (no reserve) starting at 99p plus £2 postage (UK), but I may withdraw it as I have also put it on Gumtree for £25 (which is a good price if you look at the prices being asked and realised on eBay).

Oh well, I have four to get rid of (well I can't eat them can I?)

Matt
Yep, I have one in my 50p tray.  I'm sure I've had at least one or two more of these over the past 6 months and put them back into circulation as "I already had one of them"!!  oops  z|

I have one for swap :)
One was given to me in my change tonight! Cheers Tesco!

I'm not an expert in any kind of coins, but I reckon I'm good at research and will do my best to help. Feel free to tell me my identifications/valuations/gradings are wrong. It's the only way I'll learn.
My dad was given a Kew Gardens 50p with his change in B&M on Saturday.  He now has 2 as he bought one from e-bay a while back.

Proof to me that there are still a fair few floating around out there.
I have just found a suffragette 50p. What is it's value as I see them going for all different values on ebay.
Welcome to the site. :)

That really is a great looking coin.
I agree - that is why I keep every one that I find in change.
In my reply near the top 'Posted: 22-Feb-2014' I have a few of them. Nice. :)

Don't get suckered into listening to the tabloids as well, like "50p could be worth thousands", they are misleading while knowingly referring to a troll type eBay listing. I have seen many coins worth a few £'s listed by chancers for a couple thousand. Tabloids really annoy me when they do this as it makes other clueless people think they can list "ultra rare" 50p coins and quote the daily mirror or some other ridiculous story that might be spread.

The Kew is a nice coin to have and will sell on eBay for around £40 now. The proof Kew will set you back around £70. then you have the rarest 50p which is the EC single market, this one will set you back around £30-£40 depending on condition.
