WOW. $20 for a Dharmasoka Deva massa. That is a bit costly, especially when it is coming from Sri Lanka. These coins costs about $20 here in the US! These coins are NOT scarce at all and hence is widely available...

Sorry my dear friend, I thought it's scarce when I found just 6 coins out of 730 massa coins. I just compared with local market prices. Prices for local are about Rs 2000+ ( About 15$ - 16$) and saw manny darmashokas going higher prices than the above prices on ebay.
I can't undestand how US dealars give Darmashokas coins @ 20$. I'm not sure weather you have mixed darmashoka with other massa ones??? Can you read the letters of massa??? if you found any darmashoka @ that price pleace send me the pictures of that coin.
Most of the Ceylon massa coins are abundantly available and hence are not rare nor scarce. There are three coins that are rare and both of the 1/8 massa coins are rare. I'll followup with pics of all these coins since I am away from my computer...
As I indicated in the previous post, there are three massa coins that are quite rare and difficult to obtain. I only have one of these three types of coins:
Ceylon: Nissanaka Malla (1187-1196) AE Massa (Mitchiner-835, Codrington-78)
Here is two of these coins in my collection, both are rare to extremely rare
Ceylon: Codaganga (1196-1197) AE Massa (Codrington-79)
From the collection of Jan Lingen. This particular coin is extremely rare and unfortunately, I don't have one in my collection .
Ceylon: Parakrama Bahu VI (1415-1468) AE Massa (Mitchiner-853, Codrington-97)
From the collection of Jan Lingen. This particular coin is also extremely rare and unfortunately, I don't have one in my collection .
All the 1/8 Massa coins are rare:
Ceylon: Parakrama Bahu I (1153-1186) AE 1/8 Massa (Mitchiner-832)
This particular coin is from my personal collection:
Ceylon: Dharmasoka Deva (1208-1209) AE 1/8 Massa (Codrington-80)
This is the GEM of the Dharmasoka Deva coins and hence is the only one that is extremely rare and valuable. I have never seen one being offered for sale and hence I don't have one in my collection. This particular one is from the Jan Lingen's collection:
Now going back to your original question of why these coins are not scarce. The problem is that sellers assume that because the "infant king" only ruled for a brief time before being killed, the coin is automatically rare. Well, that wasn't the case for these coins that were mass produced. Hence, they are considered common and are easily obtainable. I have about three of these Dharmasoka Deva Massa coins in my collection and two of them were bought for less than $20. All those ebay prices are highly inflated due to the history behind the infant king. The 1/8 Massa, however, is extremely rare!
Of course, you can sell your coins at any price but I would have expected that the coins would be cheaper especially coming directly from Sri Lanka...
It may be ok that you can get Darmadhoka lesser than 20$. The price is depend on the demand and supply. Hear we have a good demand for Darmashoka once and the prices are higher than the other once. But still I'm totally disagree to the statement that the darmashoka is a widely available one. More than 99% of the massa are from the following kings. lesser than 1% get from darmashoka and others.
1197_1211 Lilavati massa coin - 5$ each
1200_1202 Sahasamalla massa coin - 5$ each
1236_1271 ParakramaBahu II massa coin - 5$ each
1271_1273 Vijayabahu IV massa coin - 5$ each
1273_1284 BhuvanaikaBahu massa coin
I'm really happy to see a foreigner has this much of knoledge about the Ceylon coins. I never expect that much of knoledge from a foreigner. I just thought you have no idea at all and just compare the prices of common massa with darmashoka. But my friend need to do some corrections to your statement.
Nissankamalla - It's not extremely rare coin. I got 6 Nissankas including 2 White metel once. Local market prices are 75$ - 200$ based on the metal and condition. I Sold 1 coin to a local coin shop @ Rs 10,000 (75$). Still I have the other 5 Coins.
Chodaganga - It's not extremly rare coin. I have 2 of them. It's only very rare. Local market prices are 120$ - 250$.
Parakramabahu IV - I just have one coin bought 10 years back for Rs. 900 ( 7$). The seller had more than 60 - 70 of them. It's just scarce and not extremly rare one. At that time I was a beginer to the coin collection and skipped buying more coins. Unfortunatelly another one has taken the full lot @ a lesser price than that price even. Now he sell them @ 50$ each locally and advertising @ very higher prices on ebay telling the above coins are extremely rare.
Parakrama 1/8 is not rare it's Scarce. The prices are 20$ - 75$. I got 7 coins.
Darmashoka 1/8 - I'm totally agreed with your statement. Only 4 known coins following collectors have those once. Should it be ultra rare????
Siri Munasinghe
Kavan Rathnayake
Jan Lingen
and One coin displayed @ national meausum.
Other than that few coins from the other kings also found in the recent history.
Only 3 coins of Jayabahu king and 2 coins of Queen Kalyanawathi has identified. Other than that some of the kings minted Gold, Silver, Copper 1/2, 1/4, 1/8 and 1/16 massa once. Those are not listed or listed as rare to ultra rare. I have fiw of them also. but still I have gaps of the knoledge and do not know the rarity index of those.......
This is the statement given by lowaley on 1895 about the Darmashoka massa. He used less common to darmashoka. Does it mean scarce or common?????? I think it's butween them
This consists 4 Nissankamalla, 2 Chodaganga and 1 coin of 1/16 Parakramabahu (Very poor grade - Extremly rare coin). I have 23 verities of massa and few unidentified massa verities.
Interesting. The information on these coins comes from various western books and I guess it has changed since then (most were published in the mid-80s). Thank you for enlightening me. Can you please update me on the newer coins that have been found recently? If you have pictures, that would be awesome...

Sorry this is the only source I can provide to you since only 2 - 3 coins of those found. The letter reading still doubtfull to me.
The central meausum has about 200,000 massa coins and I guess there must be another 100,000 - 200,000 with the collectors. Only 5 coins from these 2 types found for the whole lot. But need to consider still we found about or lesser than 25% of the real mintage of massa. The rarity index I give to those Ultra rare coins may be change.

These Coins are more than 800 years old so I think above prices are reasonable considering the age of these Coins. I have seen same variety Coins sells for higher rate than the prices indicated by proboth.

Ya but majority of these coins found by local farmers and they sell them at a very lesser prices. Due to that reason majority of the coins are under priced. Also lesser than 2000 Sri Lankans actively collect coins. Due to that there is a over supply of coins.
The price of a Very rare listed Chodaganga is lesser than 250$. I sold one yestarday for 120$. Still lesser than 200 - 300 coins found. 8~
I have 3 excess nissankamallas, Even it has listed as rare I can't find a proper market for them. They are gone under 200$. 8~
But the 1821 Rix dollar get 275$ even with the mintage of 400,000????? For the quarter farthings minted milions get higher than that prices???? I so many coins with bulk mintages get better prices. :°
Sad to say there is something wrong hear. But I can't change it along..................

That is because there is a huge, stupid demand for British India coins. Because of this, coins such as the Rix and other British coins went up the roof. Furthermore, most of this is artificial demand and hence it will go down eventually (it already started a bit and hence some dealers are already loosing some money on British India coinage). This is what drove a lot of people to collect coins as they tried to strike it rich with BI coinage . As far as I am concerned, BI coins are some of the uglier colonial coinage from India, especially after the 1840. There are a few exceptions though, especially the hand-struck coinage...
