Idea for a coin identification site project and copyright woes

Hi folks,

I am thinking of making a site that helps people identify what country their coins are from.
The way i envisioned the site would be a simple tag-based image search site.

For a coin such as this: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces34007.html people would supposedly search "rooster" and the result would be a picture of the coin i linked to and pictures of all other coins with roosters except those that have the country's name obviously written on the coin for english speakers (in my rooster example, France and Malawi would not be shown because of this reason). I don't know about other coin collectors, but such a search tool that excludes obvious countries and boring commemoratives that are released by the tens of thousands of types each year would be very useful. Once the country is identified, the specific type of coin can be found on other sites that have extensive databases for each country. (like numista and zeno) The search function on numista is very useful, but it shows too many results (or too few, if the coins aren't described in detail). The results of my site's search function would be from the patterns i've seen while researching coins.
As another example, the Indian state of Lunavada would have only 2 tags/pictures, the lion and the chalice:

And the links to:
https://en.numista.com/catalogue/inde_princiers-1.html
and
http://www.zeno.ru/showgallery.php?cat=3857
Zeno has an advantage in regards of oriental coins, but my site would be with all countries.
(this is actually a quote from a PM i sent to xavier  :) )

1. Would you guys find a site such as this useful ? To me, finding the country is the more important part - because after you ID-ed the country correctly you just have to look through sites or catalogs for that country specifically. And my site would also link you to numista and zeno to ease your search (like in the above Lunavada example) :D

A site such as this would rely exclusively on pictures from numista, zeno and a few others (about 75% are from numista! ). And as you can imagine, it might be a major problem with copyright. (which is what i talked with xavier about) Numista's policy (it's the same on almost all sites such as this!) is that the person who uploads the photo owns it. https://en.numista.com/conditions.php
Verweis 9.The contents on this site are the property of their respective authors. They can not be reused without the consent of their respective authors.
So, bummer for my site idea. And i'm guessing putting "© some numista user, i dunno who lol" next to each pic doesn't count. :O

2. Would you guys who added coins allow me to use the pics you uploaded on my own site (while linking back to numista) ? Do people usually allow others to use their images if asked ? Are there many people against this kind of thing ?
I have about 1500-2000 images that i am currently in the process of tracking down where i got them from. I use those pics to help me ID coins. I am making a list of users to which i will send a request similar to how i asked here. There will probably be about 200+ users to ask.  :o
What frustrates me is that instead of studying coins i'll be stuck doing paperwork like this for a few months. :(

So there you have it, that's the wall of text about my current project
Hello,

There was an interesting discussion with a legal point of view about copyright on the french forum recently https://fr.numista.com/forum/topic39028.html
if you can some french and if google helps.
Basically, the conclusion is that all this fuss about copyright is useless if you do not do some sort of official and costly "deposition" of your images, that is if you are Disney and the image Mickey mouse. Hence anyone can use your images, or you can use other's.
It is more a matter of courtoisie to mention the original owner.
Though there is a number of forums where someone can complain if you "rob" images and this can be quite negative.
I felt most Numista members are ok if you mention their name (if you know it) and add a link to Numista.
Well this is only my opinion ...

Cheers,
André

But google-translate was surprisingly good at translating. I understood most of it.

Well, i don't want to be the jerk that steals other people's pics. And i think i will at least try to contact everyone i can find. I also think it's important for me to get approval from sites like Heritage Auctions which seems to have a lot of pics here ! Also from zeno, but vladimir hasn't responded yet - i sent him an email days ago :( .
I figured that once i get approval from the majority on my list i'll just stop looking for the users. You'd think people put their username in the copyright section; unfortunately they do not - it takes a lot of detective work to find you guys - found some of you on facebook but not on numista  B.  !

Btw Andre, you are on my list also :P
I'm at letter C in my backtracking, but so far i have you marked for some coins from Bohemia.
Well no problem for me  :)
Just put my user name and that's ok !

Cheers,

André

There is also the aspect of making money with the work of others ... but Numista is not really a selling site.
So if your web site is a non profit one and you mention the source then there is also less chance for reprimand I would think.

P.S.: if you come a cross a picture of mine that you want to use I'll give permission as long as my user name is mentioned  :`
I would have no objections sharing my images. I don't think anyone should have a problem since they are already sharing their image publicly via Numista.

Best of Luck!!

And i won't be selling anything on my site or request money for any services !

Don't worry i'll mention all your names for each pic. :)
Idolenz - for now i have you marked for coins of Finland !
You have my consent. no problem and good luck.

Btw guys has anyone ever used google translate for large texts ? It seems I'll have to contact quite a few users who only speak French according to their profile. Not sure how that will go.  B.

i once used  Google translate  for translating from  french to English .  the topic length was little  more than  an  a4  sheet .  i think it would be fine to use google translate for large text.
If you send a standard text to everyone why not ask nicely someone on the forum  who can speak french and english to have a look at the text and maybe correct it?

I do send a mostly standard text to everyone. That's a good idea.
I might post it here for someone to correct it - i don't think i know anyone who speaks both languages. I'll do that after i'm done with the english-speaking users. (should take about 1 week i think)

Thank you for your approval and don't worry - the pictures will be attributed to you. :)
I have upload only one picture, but if I do more in the future, fell free to use them.
I haven't uploaded much pictures yet, but there will be more in the future.
Everyone is free to use them.
You can use my pictures in Numista. You needn't mention my name.

It is, what it is, or is it.
I got bogged down with the least likely problem (in my opinion).
I was fully expecting HUGE sites would not even respond to my requests and smaller sites to be more helpful. However it was the other way around. Heritage Auctions (a HUGE contributor to numista and biggest collectibles auction house) and CGB (HUGE contributor also and a very big French auction house) responded very quickly and kindly gave me permission. Even Krause Publications responded !
Now i'm stuck with a list of smaller websites that did not respond to my emails (it's been almost 1 month).

Beast Coins

For Beast coins i can't even find a way to contact the owner.  8~

Does anyone know if there is any other way to contact these websites ?
I don't mind if they refuse to give me permission (they are well within right to do so !) but i wish they at least answered my email. :(

And ALLRED, i might ask you for one or two soon, as you can see i'm having trouble getting in contact with some websites.

We don't have that for Numista do we? That would be great if we could use their pictures!

They didn't give me a free-for-all usage of their pictures. They gave me very strict conditions, very specific images and fragments of images and a very limited number of them to use.
That kind of thing wouldn't work for numista, i think.
It saved me a LOT of trouble tho. I'm VERY happy for what little they gave me.
Hi,

I have already allowed you to use my images. My idea in the first place was anyway to communicate my findings to the coin collecting community to improve the documentation about variants and other related subjects.

On this site you'll find (amongst thousands of other things) coins by themes, like this:
http://www.worldofcoins.eu/forum/index.php/board,60.0.html

Personally I 'm not into thematic collecting, but it might correspond to what you want to set up?

Hey that's a great forum ! I think it could be very useful ! Thank you for sharing. :)

As an update for my site, i have added about 1300 pictures. There are about 1000 more to go.
Hope it will be sorta ready by new year. :)
I just hate it when work gets in the way of studying and doing the things you love ...
