I was inspired by a similar topic on other numismatic forum and decided to create similar one on Numista.

It will be fun if here people can post photos or stories of interesting coins they have found in their pocket change - like foreign coins, rare dates, or commemorative coins that are not supposed to be found in circulation in our countries.

Here is my contribution. About a month ago I found in my change (I live in Australia) a scratched 1998 2$ Proof coin!!!

I placed it in a holder for good memories. I have no idea how it went into circulation from this plastic cased set.

I live in the USA. We commonly get Canadian currency circulating here, but I got this one https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces430.html in my change, which is not very common.
Trade only within the US.

Nice! I got the 5 cent centennial in change during a recent daytrip in Canada. In beautiful condition (at least XF). No idea how that ended up in the change drawer of a Tim Horton's...

We too get a lot of change from the USA here in Canada. I have collected the entire set of the 50 States Quarters from searching boxes I purchased from the bank. But as far as change in my pocket, this is probably my best find to date.

That's 1902 in case you can't see the date.

Here is another one that I have had for about ten years.

I sure do miss having pennies in circulation :(

Yes I think here in the US there are more Canadian cents circulating here then in Canada. Last week the gas station lady gave me around 10 of them, free. Just to get them out of the store. She knows I collect them. There were from the 1970 and up. Two years ago I got a lot from the 1950's.
edit the holidays here silver use to come out, this year only 3 dimes. But one was a Canadian 1959 dime. Odd because a friend gave me one to as a gift in a swap, with a hole in it.
It is, what it is, or is it.

You are totally right. There are more Canadian cents circulating in the US than in Canada. The last ones were minted in 2012 here and they were out of circulation shortly after that. You guys still have them floating around... we on the other hand, have to hunt for them. There are a few banks that will still sell you their pennies if you ask but most won't. It's funny because they are obligated to send them back to the bank of Canada at their own expense.
I have found a few bank branches that will gladly sell me pennies simply because it is cheaper for them to sell them to me than to pack them into bags and send them back to the Bank of Canada. It's kind of a strange situation but that's what happens when you try to phase out a coin.

I get some very strange looks from some tellers when I ask for penny rolls these days but I AM RELENTLESS! There is always the chance that something like an Indian Head or something like the Masonic Penny that I posted will still be around. I will keep asking until they kick me out LOL!

BTW, masonic counterattack..... good way to put it! Love it.

Hold on to it. I live in Canada and only have 8 of them right now.. It's not super rare but there aren't a lot of them floating around.

They certainly aren't super rare. I'm from Belgium and I have 9 of them (1 in my collection and 8 in my exchange list).
I still go through about 2500 Cents every 3 or 4 months. About 50/50 Canada to US but, that ratio is changing fast as our Canadian Cents were last issued in 2012. Annually, I get 20 or 30 of these Centennial Cents.

I received these "foreign" coins in my last batch of Cents....

Always fun to do the research.

Wow! Thats absolutely stunning found! Really love this design of US penny (have two of these from one of swaps).

but may I ask what are searching boxes that you have bought in bank? Are these boxes of foreign coins they get from customers?
Fjodin:

The boxes that I search are just boxes of rolled Canadian coins. I go to the bank and buy a box then search the rolls for anything interesting then re-roll the coins and take the remainder back to the bank and exchange it for cash or deposit it back in my account. Sometimes I keep the box to store my doubles in.

Thanx for explanation :)

We have plastic bags full of coins (in rolls or smaller bags) that can be bought in banks and I usually search them for commemorative coins for swaps.
I've never been so lucky in my change, but recently a friend found one of these in his change in place of a dime and gave it to me:

Sorry I don't have a photo, I don't have a way to upload things from my camera right now.
There's a fine layer of brown something over it, but I think it's in good shape otherwise. I can see the hairs on Adulyadej's head and the pattern on his coat. I'll post a photo when and if I can.
