Updated 10th January 2012:

I have the set now. Once I get my finances straight and can start swapping again I shall be offering my duplicates as any other duplicate coins.

Thanks to those who helped me complete the set (you know who you are!)

Matt
I was going to send a Private Message, then saw that my spares are already ones that you have.  :(
I wonder whether all 29 have been released by now, or are they being phased in - anyone know? And I found out that the reason for a strange quantity of 29 (instead of a round 30) being issued is there will be 29 sports in the 2012 London Olympics next year. So one 50p coin for each event.
As I am a weirdo I counted (8+17=25) those in your two lists, and see there are four not there; so I guess they are where you already have just one of them, and no spares. Namely ...

The other four:

  • Cycling (KM# 1169)
  • Shooting (KM# 1179)
  • Wheelchair rugby (KM# 1187)
  • Sailing (KM# 1195)

I know the first coin issued was the Blue Peter competition winner for Athletics and is KM# 1150; the rest are KM# 1166 to 1195 but there are two numbers not in there. Anyone know what coins are given KM# 1178 and 1182 please? I looked on Numista in KM number order for UK and there is nothing. I assume they are ordinary, non-Olympic coins, or perhaps Proof ones.

Not sure as to the answer on K numbers. But, I think they are phasing the coins in, it explains some of the types that people are getting and the ebb and flow of coin sightings. Personally I'm getting disheartened of no shows of Olympic coins.
According to Numismaster, UK KM#1178 is Copper-Nickel 50 Pence, Subject 2012 London Olympics - Sailing, and KM#1182 is Canoeing (it's surprising the lengths someone will go to when they can't sleep!)

Also, just looked further and noticed that the issue date for KM#1178 is 2012, which might explain why you haven't seen any yet (I think I'm going to try and get my head down now!)
Just because you can't see it ... doesn't mean it isn't there - Anon.

You are quite correct. I have these four, but no duplicates of them. I know we can buy them from the Royal Mint as UNC in a presentation card, but that's a bit expensive (£2.99 each plus postage, or the whole set for £85 plus postage), as for whether or not they have been released into circulation, I don't know either. They seem to be localised within the UK. I have a large number of Modern Pentathlon, for example. Judging by eBay, other areas have large quantities of other events.

Matt
Hi Matt

Have you seen anything like that before?

If I may - it is Goalball (KM# 1183). I always wondered why they did not include the sport name on them.

I know :)

look closer :)

Looks like the whole set is now available in China and in plenty!

Yes that's the presentation pack issues available from the Royal Mint (how people are selling the for less than the Royal Mint confuses me). The last few circulation coins were released this last week (Tae Kwondo, Wrestling, Tennis, Judo, weight Lifting  and possibly others I have forgotten).

The earlier releases are now not seen at all in circulation, at least not in my part of the world. As soon as any of these coins hit the shop tills after coming from the bank they disappear from circulation, or at least they do around here.

Still quite a few on eBay. Are they genuine? You tell me!

Matt
Hi

OK, I mean:
Verweis : kuba997Hi

OK, I mean:
I know my eye sight is getting bad, but I still don't get what you mean. Are you saying there are arrows engraved on your example???

Matt
Oh hang on...

The goalball 50p has a mistake in the logo at the top. While all the others have the Olympic rings the goalball 50p does not (I have examined four example), there may be other differences in the logos on the other coins in the series, I haven't checked.

Here is the Goalball 50p Olympic logo:

And here is the Olympic logo from other 50ps in the series (this one came from a Judo example):
Hi

Hi

normal Goalball

Hi Matt

first logo is for Paraolympics

can you see differents between my coins?
Verweis : kuba997Hi Matt

That explains the logo. I should have looked at the wheelchair rugby 50p.

But no I cant see a diference between your pictures, other than one has red dots and white arrows on it. As I said, my eyesight is not so good.

Matt
I cannot see a difference either. Your second picture is twisted, as the the 50 PENCE should be at the bottom; so I have combined first picture with a straightened-out second picture, and show side-by-side ...

P.S. Does it also mean that apart from the expense of already trying to get all 29 of the 50p coins, there will be 58 now, as there are two different logos for each ?   :(

Hi

better picture

ZacUK - no, paraolympics sports - paraolympic logo, olympics sports - olympic logo

I think the Paralympic logo is on the coins representing the paralympic events, and the Olympic logo on the able-bodies Olympic event coins. I don't think both logos are used on the same event, so I think we just have the 29 (plus the Blue Peter edition if its different, and the completer's medal if one is anal).

In any event (sic) it's a damned expensive series to collect. Yes you can buy it from the Royal Mint for £85, or trawl the wild (much more satisfying and fun) and then the face value is £14.50 which is still a lot to a poor writer like me, and must be a fortune to a child collector?

Having obtained the 3, 2 and 1 countdown £5 coins I see the mint released a fourth 0 £5 coin, which to be honest I can not afford to buy! Especially not with their added £2.95 postage on top.

Matt
Wow, really?

That's what I was thinking when I saw the photo. Matt, the difference is that the one with the arrows has a rotation die error. Do you see it now?

Verweis : kuba997Hi Matt  Have you seen anything like that before?
Now I see it - the outer 7-sided shape of the whole coin is alright, but the inner stamping of the reverse side also has a 7-sided shape in it's design, but it is slightly out of alignment with the coin shape. So the question is - what about the obverse side - is it normal or also off?
Token collector [1600-1899] with some coins
Hi Zac

obverse side is normal...
Hi, I have one of these goalball coins, cannot find any mention anywhere. Have you heard of anyone else with these coins?
Yes. It is a paraolympic sport.
Verweis : cooney00Hi, I have one of these goalball coins, cannot find any mention anywhere. Have you heard of anyone else with these coins?
I have one; well - the complete set of 29 - at last. Not sure how the 30th coin (Completer) can be obtained. Maybe it only comes with the complete set bought from the Royal Mint.
I have seen a picture of one - it is round (not seven-sided) and has a picture of a circular stadium in the middle; no denomination though, so it is not a coin.

P.S.  The Rarity Index is 59 so quite a few members have a Goalball coin in their collection. There are four members showing they have one for exchange, if anyone wants one ...

James, you crack me up and I'm sure Matt (original thread author) would have seen the funny side but I'm worried that you're going to end up with another warning from the team about your random use of images  :O

Yeah, I must say. Despite the fact I am warming to someone...this was on thin ice. I miss Probert too.
I am sure he keeps an eye on the forum ;)

Hay Bro,

Quick observation, I know I am drifting away from the main topic but do you also store your copper or brass coins like this i.e. directly put them in the coin sheet? They don't change color?

Not so far. Incidentally, it is a bit of a bad picture, but those 29 coins are copper-nickel, like the one on the left. Don't know who makes the coin pages, but not had any problems.  :)

Many thanks for the quick reply. I put my bimetal coins in a coin holder then I put them in these coin sheets, still the color of copper changes after sometime. Planning to buy self adhesive coin holders to solve this problem. :)

After the Reply of 1-Jan-2012 with the GoalBall error coin, I have always wanted one as well (since I collect errors) and now got one today at last - six months later! And I assumed it was just GoalBall that had the inner design rotation error, but mine is the Shooting coin - 2011 UK 50 pence Olympics issue.

https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces18199.html
Although - oh no - I see there is at least one other in the world, as when adding that link, I see the picture © Jesse Ribeiro on that page ALSO shows the Shooting coin error!
All coins I have seen only have the error on the reverse; the obverse is unaffected.

Also the Boccia coin, by the looks of it.

Anyone still looking for missing Olympic 50p's I have a pretty good selection available for swap, stock changing on a regular basis. I struggled to find the 'Wrestling' one and have only come across a couple of examples.
Also just got a load of new 2011 10p's (Nickel Plated Steel) fresh from the mint  :D
