Hello.
I suppose this question somebody else also has sometimes. In Spain the difference between ordinary (non-registered) and registered mail is so high. Sometimes you try to swap and the shipping costs don't worth. Otherwise, there are some countries where the postal service is not so safe and is a risk sending coins if you don't register. So I propose writing any comments from different countries or areas about the quality of the postal services. Starting...
SPAIN: Normally, ordinary post is safe enough. I never have lost any letters, if coins there are good packed. Special times, as christmas or summer holidays could be slower than usual, but normally letters arrive right
Japan: So good that registered is very annoying as you have to be home to received... I would rather swap with normal air mail than Registered... plus to register a parcel you add $4 to the cost.
Germany: Generally reliable. Domestic delivery works overnight in 99% of all cases. There seems to be no difference in transit time if I send registered or unregistered. International letters mostly go through the "IPZ" in Frankfurt/Main (international post center). They are usually exported the day after posting them. However, I have had a few situations when registered letters were idling there for 5 days or so, for no apparent reason. Surcharge for registered letters is only 2,50 €, so much lower than in most other countries, I reckon. Standard transit times to countries that I send often to: Germany 1 day, Finland 4 days, Portugal 6 days, USA 5 days, Russia 20 days. So far two letters of many hundreds have disappeared: A domestic registered letter and an unregistered international letter to Ukraine.
Canada: Slow and overpriced. Things can take weeks to get from one end of mainland Canada to the other, all urban areas. And things routinely get damaged while in their system. The last time I even asked about registered the lowest price they offered was $35, regardless of the size. Canada Post is a complete detriment to anyone trying to do swaps or run a small business.
EDIT: Case in point: An expedited package within Canada has a projected delivery time of up to seven days. And I'm on day nine.
Kyrgyzstan: Mostly unreliable. Most anything of value has a 75-90% chance of being stolen. Customs fee are outrageous, or black money under the table. Delivery, when they get around to it, is for letters. It's hit or miss if they will even tell you that you have a package to pick up. The only, somewhat reliable services are: FedEx and DHL. EMS is still through the postal service ...

Poland : Cheap and reliable what else u need ? :)
Shiping with tracking till 50g - 4$ till 100g - 4.2 till 350 4.6$
without tracking 50g - 1.2$ till 100g - 2.9$ till 350g - 3.3$
Finland: Very reliable. In Finland it is an exception to use registered mail, perhaps some official mails. That also could be the reason why registering is extremely expensive, today 9.80 eur.

Just to add to Canada. I agree with most of what was said. Except I have never received anything damaged from Canada Post. Registered mail is very expensive. I have sent registered letters recently with banknotes that were under 100g. The cost was about $25.
New Zealand - Regular post is very reliable and reasonably priced, most letters get through within a week. Registered main is ridiculously expensive and takes about 3 times as long to get through for some reason.
Slovakia: Generally reliable for both registered and unregistered letters. Cheap as well, as registered mail up to 50 grams is €2.20 to Czech Rep., €2.30 to anywhere in Europe and €2.50 to anywhere beyond Europe.
Up to 100g the rates are: €2.60 (CZ), €2.90 (EU), €3.30 (World)
Up to 500g it gets steeper though: €4.30 (CZ), €5.50 (EU), €7.30 (World)
Ireland: Regular mail is cheap (€2.50 up to 100g Worldwide) and efficient (usually no more than one week). I've never had any problems with undelivered swaps. Registered post is significantly more expensive (an additional €6) and doesn't appear to be much quicker.
Trying to get a coin from each UN country with circulating coins. 20 to go!
HONG KONG: Fast delivery within Hong Kong (as it is just a small place, normally the mail takes 1 working day only to departure/deliver starting from posting/arrival). Posting to popular countries is not a problem but higher custom restriction in destination countries will take lot more time. Custom will never be a problem for numismatics as Hong Kong has freedom of trade (i.e. no export/import restrictions).
BANGLADESH - A super-fast developed mailing company, Bangladesh Post, that sends post within 1 day and a mail can be also received in a day. In my experience, I sent a Spanish member some coins, on 27 th February and the coins went to him on 28th February. Plus I did really have heard the same experince from other people.
A reasonable price too. Regd. mail - 1.50 EUR or 200 taka total. For normal mail 1EUR or 80 taka.

No, no no. PM me and I will show you CIVI DISPLICIT.
But please this is how Bangladesh post works. Even if it is not in Europe, there's nothing to blame the sovereignty of the country.

You too, cause it's written "cui displicet"
Nothing to do with "ciui" meaning "to the citizen".
It's a latin equivalent of old french "qui qu'en grogne".
All joking aside, I thank you for that correction :
I always made this mistake and even pronounced uncorrectly.
I won't from now on.

I am sorry Davmell. Ciao everybody.
The U.S.A. domestic unregistered mail is very reliable and fast. Registered mail is expensive domestically, and very expensive for international mail. International mail is very expensive even for unregistered mail; also, it less reliable because one has to depend on the destination country at some point. Every country's customs have their own rules. So I am reluctant to swap by way of international post. Even Canadian, which is right next to the U.S., is very expensive.
PORTUGAL:
A prepaid envelope (Green Mail) plus register costs 3.95€ to any country (Up to 2.0 Kg).
In 260 swaps I have three packs lost:
1-Germay-> Portugal (Lost in Germany)
2-Italy->Portugal. Pack carefully opened, coins disappeared. Do not know where.
3-Portugal-Poland. Pack arrived to Warsaw airport and disappeared there.
Very often I receive non registered packs, specially from countries with very expensive registered cost:
-Never lost a pack.
ITALY
i always use registered mail, and this is really the best way to be sure that you mail arrive.
BUt registered mail is quite costly and takes a lot of time
I have no experience of the cost of delivery services such as DHL for a private, that is what we usually use at work

Still for Portugal:
Since the postal services left the hands of the government, i had ALL the non registered envelops stolen. Every single one... one of them was even delivered with a cutted side.
No problems with the registered ones thought.
The Costums are another story... it´s a nightmare to retrieve a pack from outside the EU (I even quit the trades after a trade with @barsalex. My coins reached the destination around 17Mar and his more than a month later, 20Apr).
UK - Generally reliable. Registered and international post is rather expensive, but a lot cheaper than Canadian!
Iceland - One of the cheapest and most reliable postal services in Europe. Very rare for stuff to vanish. You can design your own stamps too :o
Denmark - More reliable than the UK, and generally efficient. Good luck with customer services though if you haven't had surgery to insert a potato into your throat.

Same. Great and fast within the country, very expensive, slow and unreliable internationally.
From my experience, 2 from 5 unregistred letters with coins have been lost.
For the avoidance of this it is highly recommended to pack your letters (even registred) in the way that nobody can understand that there are coins inside.
My personal list of scammers from Numista: erniemix, yvain, CassTaylor
Israel: It's like a lottery. Sometimes it arrives really fast, sometimes it takes months (months!). It's essential to send registered, because if it's lost, nobody will talk to you without the tracking number. Sad as it is, but this is how it works.
Australia Post provides a very reliable mail service within our very large country. We have different classes of mail, Normal, Priority & Express all with different charges. Express comes with tracking and you can register the others for tracking if you want.
International mail is reliable also but Registered International is expensive. I always just send normal International and I have not yet had any packages go missing. You are of course at the mercy of the receiving Country and I have found the most difficult one to be Portugal. The Customs service there can delay letters from outside of the EU for up to three months or more? WHY? What are they doing with them? They must have a massive warehouse full of undelivered non-EU originating mail just sitting there gathering dust!
I should add a small disclaimer ... I work for Australia Post as Van Driver .... :)
Cheers Mike

Earlier this summer, I tried to do a swap with a collector in Libya. He never received my coins and I never received his. His package is registered, but mine is not. Mine is lost in the wind because I didn't register it because the US doesn't encourage sending items to Libya. According to the Libyan post office, the coins he sent are in a "domestic bag,' whatever that means. It doesn't look like I am going to get them.
Has anyone had any experience trying to send items to Libya? Should I just chalk up the items as lost/stolen and move on?
Mostly US 1st class is inexpensive and always traceable. There are some countries that, once the mail gets there, can no longer be tracked (China famous for "losing" US sent packages at customs). Have found that for international mailing, that PRIORITY mail is best. USPS able to keep track of it to most countries and destinations, and GENERALLY able to deliver within 2 weeks anywhere. Of course, there are still failures, but these are usually customs delays.
Just a few words about Russian post. First of all Russian post's rules prohibited to ship money (including coins!) in a parcel. So if your coins can be detected in an envelop it will be lost for sure. It doesn't mean stolen, so pack your coins better if ship to Russia. Second Russian custom's law prohibited shipping in a mail (registered or nonregistered) the next items:
- precious metal coins (anyone, Ag, Au, Pt, Pd...modern or old...doesn't matter). It is allowed to take such coins out personally when travel abroad and ship they from Europe. I know somebody sends silver coins by mail, but it is rather risky.
- coins with an age more then 100 years. It is prohibited to send such coins out of Russia at all, even if they are in poor condition and really priceless. It is also prohibited to take such coins out of Russia personally. You can get to a prison.
So if you ship coins to Russia please avoid mentioning in custom description words "coins" and "numismatic".
The best description is "collectable items". Third There is a monthly limit for foreign purchases in Russia - 1000 EUR per person per month. The exsess amount are subject to 30% custom fee, so the best decision for swapping is set price of good as "gift".
I buy coins worldwide for a 7 years and can say Now Russian post works much better then 2-3 years ago. For this time I have got more then 400 parcels and have only 1 lost (only registered mail), but one parcel arrived after 9 months from sending date.
In general. Using registered mail is rather safe for Russia, but coins have to be well packed and custom declaration has not contained words "coins" and "numismatic". In such a case probability of delievery is very close to 100%.
I hope it will be useful for all swap partners.
Happy collecting

I have 4 sendings from Russia, from different origins that never reached me after 6 or more months. They are all tracked, and shows as processed to exit country, but no more news.
I guess maybe they detected were coins/medals, but they don't give information; just shows as processed and then disappeared; I think they should at least let sender know the problem.

Regular Post service is very safe, they never lost an untracked sending of mine, and maybe 2 or 3 haven't reached me, but I can't say if they were lost in my country, or outside. So far, I have sent more than 20 untracked parcels, and have received 100+
Certified service is absolutely safe, on Numista I have sent over 50 and received same amount, and never had problems out of some delays (specially to and from countries with no high volume of mail).
Only problem is that sending from Uruguay to countries outside Mercosur is very expensive. 500g would cost USD 15 within Mercosur, and jumps to USD 35 for rest of countries.

Netherlands:
Good quality postal system. Usually delivers the next day when posted nationally. The last few years it might take a day extra. Usually nothing gets lost, although once or twice it might, but I don't think it gets stolen.
Anyway, good, reliable and trustworthy postal system, if you ask me. No need for registred mail on this side.
Costs: reasonably, in my opinion.
I live in Russia and I have had about 300 swaps (mostly by registered mail).
2 of them were lost (both left Russia and were on their way to Spain).
I pack my coins so that the handlers can not feel them inside the envelope, but I received many parcels with coins travelling freely inside the envelope and I still got them)
Stealing is not common and the mail has become faster lately.
Until now most difficult was the Belorussian post as they love it to open the incoming parcels to check and send the taxes' bills if the value is over than 22 eur in total in their opinion.
And the most funny case was I guess with British sorting centre when the mail to Tunisia they wrongly sent to New Zealand (???) so it came there was sent back to Europe again and only then to Tunisia, so it took a few months:)
And the first place comes to the Azerbaijan's post which made it a miracle - just 2 days from there to Latvia, really unexpected!
Georgia.
Post works very well. Local part of sending is too fast - item makes just 1 days from post-office to the airport. Delivery is also quite fast, as in whole Europe.
from 1998 to 2018 I hade about 400 swaps, and had just 1 problem in 2001, when a guy receive instead of my coins an envelope with hand-made "postcard" and writing on it " Thank You! Best wishes from Moscow".
Prices , I guess are high , depending on total life level in Georgia. But price is base on the country of delivery.
Even non-registered letters with coins always delivered to my partners. ( I tried it about 15-20 times)
