I didn't end up with a very large collection, but I am not a numismatist by any means and don't know how to valuate this collection and don't know how to even go about listing or selling what he has. I'm currently cataloging his collection here but could use some help. If anyone knows how to upload what I have in my collection to here, I would also appreciate the help

Thank you,

Jesse
Hi,
what kind of help you need ? To sell coins here you must have positive feedback.
You can also go to numismatic shops they can easy evaluate the collection.

I invite you to my FB group about commemorative coins : https://www.facebook.com/groups/1635288620035921
Roughly how many did you get? If you want any help you can post photos in the Numismatic Questions or the Identifications and Valuations forums, but if it's in the hundreds that would be tedious.
If you do that it's best to get both sides of the coins, and not too many in the same picture, so we can see as much detail as possible. If you have any real mysteries it's best to include a size and weight.

If you decide to go to coin shops in your area I recommend going to more than one if possible, unless you're looking to just quickly sell them to get them off your hands. The more estimates and information you have on them the better price you stand to get.

If you're having trouble deciding you can PM me a photo of the whole lot and I can help you gauge the most efficient way to go.
Try an auction house! It's the easiest way.
They can evaluate the state of the coins and sell them for you.
Cents are money too!
Most of your coins are low value, but there are a few standouts. E.G. if the 1899-B Trade Dollar is authentic, it lists for $80 in uncirculated condition. You can research values here: https://www.ngccoin.com/price-guide/world/
Have you considered building on your grandfather's legacy and becoming a coin collector yourself? I may be slightly biased but I don't think I've ever met anyone who regretted becoming a collector.

You will find all the help you need right here on this website. There's identification by genuine experts, a lively forum and an active list of swappers from all over the world.
Non illegitimis carborundum est.  Excellent advice for all coins.

I second pnightingale's comment about continuing with the collection. The coins in my collection from my grandparents are some of my most memorable, knowing they were coins chosen by family.

If you decide that you aren't interested in putting time into the hobby, you might check with other family members too.

I bet there are a few wives that wish they had nipped it in the bud. I know mines one !
I am going to play devil's advocate like Phil here... aren't you interested at all in starting a coin collection, with the plus that you can pass it to your kids - grandchildren and perhaps you can identify which wants were from your grandfather and which ones were from you and so on...

I will be fascinated with a collection with this kind of family history!!!

Thanks for the feedback and info. I have roughly 2000-3000 coins, but not from any one specific country or region, but coins from various countries. There are pages and pages of Australian and Irish coins , roughly 100-150 years old. I've attempted to add more of the coins in the meantime, but I'm also hitting learning curve with this site.

For example, I cataloged dozens of US pennies, but I don't see how to add errors. I see that I can add notes and comments, but that's for the entire year. In one instance, I'm trying to catalog several 1943 S Steel Pennies. I've cataloged several that are of no specific variations, but I also have one that is missing the "4" in the year, and I have 2 that have double mint marks. On the line for a 1943 S Penny, I added the few that are just hand graded, but I can't figure out how to add the 2 that are double MM, and 1 WWII that's missing the 4.

As for bringing them to coin shops, I don't know how to go about getting them evaluated. I don't have the entire collection cataloged, so I don't know if I'd trust leaving the entire collection with a shop to be priced. I'm also afraid of shooting myself in the foot by letting the collection go for a low ballpark figure if there are some gems among the collection that I'm just not educated enough to know. I don't want to hand over a small fortune for a quick buck.

In the days when my grandfather was doing the shows and trading and selling, he had some hand-written prices, but it was the late 80's and early 90's when he quit collecting due to health issues, which later claimed his life. Now that it's 20-30 years later than when he first valuated these coins, I would imagine they increased in value (and there are some coins in the collection with $700-$900 prices)

I live in New Jersey and would love a little hand holding here as I'm trying to get a fair price for the collection (my daughter was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and I'm trying to raise funds to cover the incredible costs)

Thank you so much for taking the time to read and advise. I truly appreciate any and all help I can get.

Jesse
The fact that healthcare, especially for children in the US isn't free saddens me so much. I hope that's not too political, but it's just an alien concept here in Europe.

I've had a quick scan through your collection listed here and unfortunately the coins you've listed so far aren't worth anything. (With the exception of the Guatemalan Peso which may fetch $40 or so.)

It may be that he has many common ones, and a few rarer ones or that values have shifted in the interim.

You could start by listing the ones written as 700-900 in your collection here, and maybe taking some photos of them. The user dltcoins is extremely knowledgeable about ancient and medieval coins, and the user halfdisme is a very experienced seller of milled coins so they may be able to help you with values. Unfortunately I can't attest to their honesty or how well they pay for stock as I've never made a direct buy/sale from them.
without photos we really cant help you. You can post some photos of your most valuable coins, or you can send me all the coins and I will give you a lowball cash payment slightly higher than the coin shop (;0
Really, you should just do as Pnightingale said and start collecting.

@ Oggy, yes, that's political, there is nothing free, someone pays for it one way or another. The question is not weather healthcare should be free, but rather should society share the burden and it be equally available to all regardless of the individuals income. But we had better leave it at that.
Taking a break from swapping for a while, but still interested in pre 1799 Spanish coins, I will make time for that!

Looking for pre 1783 coins
I am interested in some of the ones you have listed, I'll send you a private message.

@Oggy, I can't help it and have to comment on this one. I completely agree this is political. There is nothing free, except, maybe, the air we breath. We all pay for it one way or another.
You actually do have some lovely coins, you're not going to get a lot of money for these, not a small fortune anyway, but they are worth enough to know what's up. Some coin shops are honest, some are crooks, like anything I guess. I was joking in my comment above about paying slightly more than a lowball coin shop, but what do you want for the entire lot?
I still think you should consider coin collecting, it has a lot of ties to history and culture. You get to looking at a coin and end up learning about what happened in that nation during that year and you'll get be a great education.

Jesse....if you have anything from Puerto Rico or Cuba, I'd be greatly interested. While I am new to Numista, you can find me on Ebay as "Nobaht1".
