I see this coin marked as non-circulating, but it has a mintage of 37 million. That's huge for such a coin. What is the story behind it?

Hi, very common coin in the UK, a lot of these were handed out at the Queen's silver jubilee celebration street parties as I remember, think they must have minted enough for over half of the UK population just to celebrate the Queen's silver jubilee.

Yup! I've met British collectors/dealers who have literally stacks of those (and the other common CuNi, 5 shilling/25 pence commemoratives like the 1972 Silver Wedding Jubilee, the 1980 Queen Mother's 80th birthday, and the 1981 Charles and Diana coin).

I wasn't around in 1977 myself just yet, but I know those are extremely cheap and common coins (once saw a place where you could get 3 for £1). It's probably legal tender, but not actually circulating.
Never tried to spend one of these Sophie, don't think the shops would accept them, the east Europeans working in the UK tend to like to buy them as they are a crown size coin so quite large, the Churchill and Diana crown coins sell regular for around £1, this one for around 50 pence if you're lucky. I've sold hundreds of these crowns but will be a long time getting rich for sure!

In Finland those are overpriced, asking prices usually €3-5 + postage. It was quite a jackpot when I acquired my Churchill for €1 + postage.

I think these are still legal tender, which means in UK that post offices accept them and maybe some banks.

It was one of the first coins I remember buying deliberately out of numismatic interest back in the UK about six years ago, so it holds a special place in my heart. :`

It's interesting that despite it being such a low value coin, it is still the target of forgers; and apparently they couldn't even be bothered to get the date right:

I quess they use wrong dates as a insurance so no one can claim them to be fakes. Just replicas with fantasy date. At least forgers may think so.
Unbelievable. I wonder who they can fool for 350 $, "a very rare 1877 coin". I can believe it's very rare: an 1877 Elizabeth II coin. In 1877 they couldn't even know there ever would be an Elizabeth II. It's a pity not all the forgers are so stupid as this one.
I always found that if you tried to spend one of these crown sized coins, virtually all of the shops would refuse it on the grounds that it was a foreign coin.
The only 'crown' sized coin that circulated for a little while was the 1981 wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer.
You got one in your change if you were in 'Boots' the chemists. This only lasted for a few weeks.
I'm just a collector of coins, not a slave to it, unless I am in a coin shop.
For all you banknote collectors. Link to my swap list.

It might be the same for these Andrew and Sarah wedding coins from "1086" then... ``-

But to be honest, if they ever had even the slightest regard for laws/ethics, the problem would have stopped there and we wouldn't be where we are with regards to fake coins now.... :snif:

Actually it looks like they are selling 350 pieces for the lot price of 345 dollars. Seller is out of Bangladesh, which is something I haven’t seen before.
