Hi all!

I just wanted to ask about making a one dollar bill collection. I want to make this by series year and federal reserve bank (A-L) (this set includes about 300 bills) but I am not sure where to start. I have a full list of all of the bills, though. Is anyone else making this sort of collection, and if so, how are you finding bills and organizing them?

P.S. Just to clarify, I only want to collect the $1 bills since '63.

Thanks!
Welcome to Numista.

If you follow the pick number system you would first organize your notes by year and then by reserve bank. Since this is your collection it is really up to you how to organize it.

As a world wide note collector having one of every reserve bank is beyond what I want especially now that I’m living in Thailand. When I was back in the USA I did attempt what you are trying to attempt for one series and found it difficult to find all 12
banks. Good luck.

If you are living in the USA it shouldn't be too hard to find post-1963 green seal $1 notes in circulation, no? Correct me if I am mistaken; otherwise just keep your eyes peeled when you receive change.
Thank you guys!

blue-m, What do you mean by pick number?

Also, CassTaylor, yes, it should be easy but some of the older editions (especially the '63 ones) are not easy to find in circulation. Also, I have a 3 ring binder with 4-pocket pages for US bills. Should I allocate room for everything so I can just find the page and add it in, or should I wait until I get all of them and then put them in albums?

Oooh, hope you don't mind if I take this one!
Pick numbers are basically a universal (more or less) cataloguing system similar to KM#s for coins, used by the Standard Catalog of World Paper Money (SCWPM).

As for your other question, that's really up to you, but if I were doing it I'd allocate room. I can imagine the older ones being comparatively scarcer, but I recently got a 1963 B $1 Green seal note for face value from a dealer - so with a bit of luck it shouldn't be too hard it seems.
Thanks for the info! Also, what dealer? 8) Furthermore, are federal reserve seals characterized as mint marks for coins? Like 1 cent 2017D vs 1 dollar 2017 A?

Flea market dealers can be either the most generous people in the world, or the most stingy. :D

As for the other question I'm not completely sure. I've seen sites that segregate US notes like that, but maybe an American collector can answer your question, for I am merely a type collector.

Here's how the site I use, Colnect, does it:

Since the BEP prints them for each bank i personally dont see it that way BUT thats just me, i may be wrong but most are printed at the BEP Fort Worth TX facility . The REAL dates are found using the last letter of the serial number as it denotes print run, USPaperMoney.info lists all known run information and can help you find out what month and year your note was printed in. As an aside i have completed my collection of one example from each series, 1957B (last silver certificate series) to the present, still waiting for the release of the Carranza-Mnuchin series 2017 notes.

I have a question for you since you are a collector of US dollar notes. My brother asked since he know I'm a collector, since they no longer print the one dollar with the letter "I" is it going to be worth something some day to a collector? Thanks

Are you sure they no longer print in Minneapolis (Letter I)? I thought they still did...

I read it some place that it close and was sold for printing other reasons. I'll have to see if I can find it again.

OK my mistake, Minneapolis doesn't print the money, only two places in America prints it. Washington DC and Ft. Worth. Minneapolis is one of 12 Federal Reserve Bank that distribute it. And yes they are still active. Sorry for the mistake.

Are you going to restrict your collection to the "regular issues"?

Star Notes are replacements for errors discovered in the examination process. Star Notes are not always printed for every bank.

There was also an experiment with web-fed notes. These are identified by the placement of the plate number on the reverse.

If you have not done so, I would recommend that you spend some time reading a catalog on U. S. currency. You do not have to buy it--there should be one available at your local library.

It will enhance your understanding of how the series numbers change; when certain series were issued; etc. The series numbers sometimes overlapped; Series 1935H and 1957B Silver Certificates were still being printed in the 1960s.
