Hi All!

I have some 'old' Chinese coins i could do with some help on. I was given these when I was in Xinjiang by an old guy who I helped with his car.

I want to see if anyone can give me some guidance on even where to start?

So, we have:

Top Left: 3.47g 24.5mm (Thickness - 1.25mm)
Top Right: 4.17g 25.4mm (Thickness - 1.23mm)
Bottom: 3.05g 24.85mm (Thicness 0.95mm)

None of them are perfectly round and none have the same thickness around the coin either so that is at the widest point.

Two seem to be a cast bronze and the bottom one looks more copperry (yes, that's a word!), although still cast.

Some of the centres have small holes from wear and poor casting?

Let me know if anyone wants anymore info. As with any 'old' coins, I haven't ruled out them being modern reproductions!

Thanks in advance :)

Dan

Hello,
They are genuine.

Top right : A cash minted at Dongchuan (in the Yunnan Province) under Daoguang https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces37507.html ("Dao" written with a straight line ; Hartill# 22.639)
Top left : A cash minted in the board of revenue (Beijing) under Qianlong : https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces1133.html (No privy mintmarks, type B, with broad rims and a gap inside "Boo" so Hartill#22.202 for me)
Bottom : A cash minted in the Yunnan province (probably at Lin'an) under Qianlong https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces17924.html (Hartill# 22.345 for me with the curve foot of "Bao" and the large "阝" in Long)
They are indeed cast:

Hi All,

I have identified many of the other ones that I had and I am left with three:

Approx:
Top right: 3.40g 24.56mm
Top Left: 3.55g 23.00mm
Bottom: 3.63g 24.80mm

I wonder if you could cast your expert eyes over them when you have chance? :wiz:

Thanks,

Dan

There are several difficulties I am having giving a proper answer to your question.

1) There are at least as many variations in Cash coins as there are stars in the sky. And as a novice, I have a sketchy record of identification. However, I did get a copy of David Hartill’s excellent reference book CAST CHINESE COINS that I will use for this discussion. Note that many of the differences are in size, weight, composition and variance in writing.
2) Numista is a work in progress and sometimes the listings do not include an exact match. Nor do all of the Authors use the same numbering system. Proposing to list every variant might be something for a later discussion.

That said, I believe that your first coin is similar to Hartill’s #16.135.
Your second, I believe, is H#16.307. It differs from our listing in the symbol on the right.

Your third is similar to H#22.219 and is one of the many variants in writing.

Any input or correction is appreciated.
