Hello,
I think this subsection needs some adjstements as this category regroups everything minted in India from the 6th century to 1950 without distinctions between the different periods and coinages.
I would like to propose the following version to class the different issuers of the "Indian states and kingdoms" in a comprehensive and easy way.
It probably needs some corrections and ameliorations.

One of the first feudal coins minted in India was inspired by the sassanid coinage : they are sometimes called "later indo-sassanian" but are not related directly to the Indo-Sasanian Kingdom (it didn't exist anymore).

The first coins of this group can be attribuated to the "Gujura confederacy" (post Gupta period) with two main kingdoms who minted coins : the "Gujura of Sindh" and the "Gujura of Johpur". Some coins of those series are unatributed yet.
Then we have three main emerging empires in India :
- the "Pratihara Empire" who ruled on the Gurjaradesa
- the Pala Empire
- the Rashtrakuta Empire : they didn't mint coins, however at least one of their vassals did (the Paramaras of Malwa).

The coinage of those areas slowly changed with new emmerging powers and was characterized by the Bull and Horseman types (I think we can keep the two groups together) :

Meanwhile in other parts of the sub-continent we can see the influence of the hinduism in the coinage with pictural deities. The muslim conquests marqued the end of this coinage (and issuers by the way) in the areas they controlled ; southern part of India kept this model as well as some "remote" areas).

Bengal, Myanmar and surrounding areas influenced by other currencies ; non-pictural coinage (excepted for the Harikela kingdom) :

The following issuers appeared with the musulman conquests (for me they should be placed under the Islamic States, but I guess some people won't be happy about that), so I guess we can keep them here under :
  • India > India - Musulman > Ahmadnagar, Sultanate of
  • India > India - Musulman > Bahmani, Sultanate of
  • India > India - Musulman > Bengal, Sultanate of
  • India > India - Musulman > Bijapur, Sultanate of
  • India > India - Musulman > Cannanore, Kingdom of
  • India > India - Musulman > Delhi, Sultanate of
  • India > India - Musulman > Golkonda, Sultanate of

  • India > India - Musulman > Kalat, Khanate of
  • India > India - Musulman > Kashmir, Sultanate of
  • India > India - Musulman > Madurai, Sultanate of
  • India > India - Musulman > Malwa, Sultanate of
  • India > India - Musulman > Sindh, Sultanate of

Those entities where followed by the Mughal Empire, so we can keep it under :
  • India > Mughal Empire

The rebellion of Maratha against this empire created a new superpower in India :
  • India > Maratha Empire or Maratha, Confederacy of (not sure which suit the best to this one)

We should probably group the following issuers with Maratha as they seem to be indepedant as well during this period ( they are all present in the same area) :

Those Empires collapsed with the rise of princely states under the British Crown :

Other issuers already present in the list above :
Hyderabad-Elichpur = subsection of the Hyderabad princely state (normally a 4th level issuer)
Jodhpur Feudatory Kuchaman = subsection of the Jodhpur princely state (normally a 4th level issuer)
Marathra-Thanjavur = subsection of the Maratha Empire ?
Hindu Shahi = Kabul Shahi
Ohinda Dynasty = Kabul Shahi (The Hindu shahis ruled in the Kabul valley with their capital at Walihind (Ohinda), so we just have different names for the same entity).
Tinnevelly = Madurai Kingdom (Nayak dynasties)
Pala (Pagoda) = Confusions seem to have been made on this one between the name of the rulers and the name of the Empire : the coins seem to belong to other issuers.
Is it possible to check this coin https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces74724.html ?
For me it's most likely a gold stater and I'm not sure it really belongs under the Pala Empire as Mahi Pala was a Pratihara emperor.

I hope it wasn't too indigest to read 0:)
It was a long read... although I am not entirely sure what is needed. It is rework oc the whole section right? B.
Catalogue administrator
Yep, a rework of this section : it's actually a melting pot of everything related to the Indian coinage from early medieval period to the British colonisation.

It's really hard to navigate in this category when you are looking for something specific and don't know the name of the entity used in this section : this post is as long as the list of issuer is (it was the point : we have to deal with that when we are looking for a coin there).
India has a long coinage history : we have to create new "categories" for a better understanding of those coins.

Based on this coinage, the history of the country and the area of influence of some civilisations, I have proposed few major groups that shares the same specificities (it's my main request for this section).
  1. Princely States (major parts of India : vassal territories of the British Crown ; from the 18th to 1949 ; mostly rupees)
  2. Mughal period (controlling major parts of India ; About 16th to 19th century ; rupees)
  3. Muslim conquests, rising of the Delhi et Benghal Sultanates (North and Center of India ; 12th to 16th century ; islamic coinage (mostly tankas) )
  4. "Hindu" Coinage (whole India except Pakistan (6th to 13th century), remain in the South of India and remote areas of Himalaya until the modern period ; Independant Indian coinage (stater / fanams / pagoda) )
  5. Northwestern Coinage (Pakistan and north-west of India ; sassanid inspiration and bull and horseman types ; 6th to 12th century ; drachms and jitals)
  6. Northeastern Coinage (Bengal and Myanmar areas ; resist to the mughal and muslim expansion ; eastern and nepalese inspirations ? I don't know much about those coins ; mostly tankas)
Ok, could you also ask a referee? I am inclined to do this, but only after Indian States are fully split.

The suggestions looks good to me.

I shall start working on this next week. There will be so many changes, so this will take a while.

This is so complex I have to do it this way. I will BOLD here the things I have already done. For some, I would probably need some help, since I am certainly not an expert on Indian coinage.

Hello Cycnos,

Could you (or anyone else for that matter) answer my questions in my post here please. I am not really knowledgeable enough about India, so I am trying to work this out slowly and right.

Long list of Dynasties of India, without a single mention of the Largest, Greatest, Oldest and the Most revered and Powerful Buddhist Kingdom of India, "King Ashoka the Great"- 305BCE to 232BCE. He is the Greatest King of India and Asia, well in the world. The Kingdom or Dynasty ruled many centuries and pretty much many parts of ancient Asia!. His dynasty/kingdom is called “Maurya Kingdom” or Maurya Dynasty". Prior to King Ashoka, two other Kings from his family ruled, King Ashoka was the third King of Maurya Kingdom. He established Asia wide Buddhistm ruling, India was Buddhist nation under King Ashoka and his family of Mauryan Kings who followed after King Ashoka.

Not only you have no mention of the above, but pretty much entire dynasties you quoted as hindu dynasty? This is quite disturbing and laughable, the word hindu was discovered just around the time British came to India just about  ONLY 400-450 year Old (1600AD-1700AD period), King Ashokas timeline was 304BCE that is about 2000 years earlier than the so called “hindu” word ever mentioned. The word hindu has No meaning when it comes to History of India, but you have called all the dynasties as hindu dynasty, need lots of fact checking my friend and historical reasearch to re-write your list of dynasties!. Many centuries after King Ashokas time and many centuries after Maurya Kingdom vanished, India was still ruled by Buddhist Kings. I have not seen even a single mention of Buddhist Dynasty, wow….great work.

Oh Wait, I left the Most intriguing and groundbreaking Kings of India in my previous post, the Chola's Dyanasties, they were Tamil Kings" and ran Buddhist Kingdom to the most part of their ruling, nothing to do with hindu religion or hindu dynasties.

Cholas were either as great as King Ashoka or even more greater than Mauryan Kingdom, as Cholas established their Kingdom around 850AD-1250AD extending to neighboring Asian countries, so not just in the Southern part of India or northern part of India, but all the way into other Asian countries. Talk about Chola's, use Tamil Dyansties, or Tamil Buddhist Dynasties" that is the right way to show some respect to Tamil People and Tamil History, as well as real history of India.
