Hello guys, I would like to ask you which banknotes still has circulation (legal tender) in India right now? The old series (from the picture) still has exchange value? I cant find it... Thanks!
It is my understanding from an Indian friend that only the 500 and 2000 were and still are the only demonetized notes from that series. Through him there were a few notes that I obtained from that series that are still widely available. What’s interesting is that the new series is not widely available yet throughout all of India. If anyone has updated info on this I would appreciate it also.
After independence there have been two demonetization events in India
1] Demonetization of all 1000, 5000, 10000 rupee notes in 1978 via The High Denomination Bank Notes (Demonetisation) Act, 1978
2] Demonetization of 500 and 1000 rupee notes in 2016 of the Mahatma Gandhi Series via The Specified Bank Notes (Cessation of Liabilities) Ordinance, 2016 which was later replaced y the The Specified Bank Notes (Cessation of Liabilities) Act, 2017
Rest all banknotes are legal tender.
The note displayed in the picture is no longer a legal tender and hence do not have any exchange value.
As per the latest info from RBI 99.3% of banknotes demonetized in 2016 have returned back and it very likely that the numismatic value of these notes will increase over time.

Parimal, thanks a lot this informations were very helpful!
All good except the 2,000 rupee note did not exist before the 2016 reissuance.
Now the following notes are legal tender (Rs 1, 2, 5 - seldom seen), 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 2,000. The 200 was added in 2017.
Coins I think are the Rs 1, 2, 5, 10 and I am not sure if the 50 Paisa is still legal.
I love coins. Especially silver, gold and anything really old.

50 Paisa is still a legal tender but is rarely seen in circulation now. Though it is legal tender 50 Paisa coins are no longer minted.
25 Paisa and below denomination coins are no longer legal tenders

Sorry for being slightly off topic.
But as it is Indian note related thought it better than starting a new thread. Hope that's ok.
I picked up this note last year, seems it is some form of regional or village issue. Does anybody else have one or know anything about them?
Thanks

Hello. These 1000 rupees Notes of India were demonetized on 8th November 2016 along with the older version of 500 rupees notes. Currently, there are no 1000 rupees notes in circulation as legal tender. New 500 Rs notes and 2000 Rs notes have been introduced instead.
