So which one do you think it is?
I also need people to see if this is a genuine piece.
Does anyone know who I can contact to look over this piece?
After looking at your piece, this is a meiji 1 shu-gin. Looks real to me but you have to sent it to a shop dealer to see. The weight should be 1.88 grams according to the Jnda catalogue. It is 88% silver and 12% other metals. And there is no way tell which exact year it was manufactured as they do not put the year on these. Meiji 1 shu gin was only produced in meiji year 1 and meiji year 2.

Unfortunately no. In Singapore these should cost less than 50 dollars.
And it will be considered an expensive buy due to the numismatic value.

Do you mean 50 US dollars or Singaporean dollars?
Verweis : "KLiao"Do you mean 50 US dollars or Singaporean dollars?
50 SGD and below. They are expensive because it's ONLY 88% silver out of 1.88grams. To do the math is

88 / 100 = 0.88 in percentage.:wiz:
0.88 * 1.88 = 1.6544 grams in silver.

Say example of 1 gram of silver is 50 cents USD in spot price,

1.6544 * 0.5 = 0.8272 Cents. (Not even 1 USD. lets round of at 1USD for easy calculation.)

Say if Singapore sells average 30 SGD converts to USD is ard 22.1 USD.
22.1 -1 = 21.1USD.

There you go. You are paying about 22.1USD for the Numismatic history and value. x.

Disclaimer. The math above is only for show and no means of accurate measurement. You are to ensure that you bring in to a dealer and strike with a deal from there. I am not responsible for any loss or damage if you use my math above to deal with any dealer.

Hope it helps.:D

So do you think paying 15 usd is too much for it?
I'd say that's fair, I paid $18 for mine and it's in slightly better shape.

Hi Klaio, can see that you are very new to collecting so share a few tips with you.

Well, i would say it is up to own individual. Very subjective. In Singapore if the 1 shu gin is graded and slabbed, it would goes up to say 100 to 120 SGD depending on the condition. Slabbing services cost ard 60 or more as i heard from people but i never done it myself. How do i buy the coins i would rank the following below.

The main purpose of coin collecting is hobby. I don expect the coin to raise the price to say 1 coin 500 dollars over night. (That is what happen to Malaysia and some people have been burn for the 1st series 50 cents coins. Read below to find out more.) And at the very least what i collect must be authentic.

If you are really into coin investment, it can be very stressful as the precious metal are always going up and down plus need to always keep a look out for the low mintage, rare and popular ones. These are very hard to find and you can guess it what is the price like.

Is the coin slab? Yes means cost more. No means cost less. (General rule is buy the coin not the slab. There are cases of mishandling but rare and subjective. Example it is graded at ms 68 but in the later years, there is fingerprint on the coin itself and is fingerprint damage due to mishandling. )

If the condition of the coin is good, i would look at how the prices how the coins are been priced. Example for me i feel a slabbed coin of ms-62 cost 100 dollars. But like i say the silver is only 1.5 SGD, the overhead is 98.5 SGD. But because it is slabbed and graded, you may have a high guarantee that this coin is authentic. But because i always buy from a trusted dealer, so i am not worried that about the authentic thingy as he has a refund guarantee. Plus the pocket would not allow me to spend so much on this coin. So i brought a nice one say at 40 SGD. That is the maximum i would pay for as i feel.

After paying, i would go home double check the information using a catalog book, measure, weight and ensure with due care, slab it with the lighthouse quadrum slabs (https://www.lighthouse.us/square-coin-capsules-quadrum.html) and later part when i have all the things read, i would put them in a album and print the information and put them together to enjoy and share my collection.

Regarding the Malaysia 50 Cent craze.

One new paper article says that if your 50 cents coin is reeded, it is worth rm100 dollars. As you know humans, greed comes 1st. Without understanding what is going on, some paid thousands for these 50 cents reeded coins. So one minute, what is going on? Do i meant what they are doing are wrong? Yes and no. Why do i say that. Yes they are wrong because they do not know which one reeded are the really worth 100 dollars or even thousands. The only worth money ones are called freaks. The normal coins comes with reeded with security thread. The freaks coins does not. And only 3 years are really the worth money ones. No they are not wrong. Because life is hard and everyone wants to strike rich in a instance. But because they are blinded by their greed, good luck to thoses who paid a premium without knowing what is going on.

Last thing is "Collect what you like to Collect" as the world is too big and you cannot collect everything. I collect Japan coins, Malaysia normal Circulating coins, Singapore normal Circulating Coins. If any commemorative coins comes along, my wallet allows, i buy. If not i totally skip. Happy collecting.
