Hi everyone,

Today I received this lot I won for CDN $18.50:

As I catalogued everything, what a surprise it was to find a coin that seems to be quite scarce, so much so that in Unc red-brown (as I received it, but might not be obvious in the photo) it seems to be worth over CDN $100 = over US $70-75. With the information on the holders and the possibility to determine the diameter (and therefore denomination) of the coins, may be some of you could find out which one? It's probably not going to be easy, but if you like challenges, this is for you. NB it's a coin, not a medal or token.

I want to play, but I can't see the coins well enough to make out the fine details. Can we get some more detailed pics?
Is that a Croatia 1941 2 Kune coin in the top row? If so, you've made your money. If not, still a great lot for the price.
Thanks, JRo69, for bringing the Croatian 2 kune to my attention. I usually ignore the values in Numista because they are so unrealistic, as in this case since it's basically the same value for VF to AU. Mine is UNC and according to the Krause, it would be worth US $45 (while Numista has it at C $18 = about US $13-14).

One of the other nice surprises is Lot 130 at the bottom. This is an Italian 5 centesimi, 1918, AU. Krause gives the values in XF and UNC as US $50 and $100 respectively.

The coin I'm thinking about is UNC with about 40% luster, but you would never know from the picture. In the Numista catalogue it is marked as "rare". Well, here are the other dealer's pictures:

If you know your western European coins well, you may have a suspicion of what coin it is...

It's of course the one centesimo 1918

Nice one ;)

Well done, Ducatx!

It happens to be the smallest coin in the lot. It truly was a "holy sh*t!" moment when I found out what it was. I would never sell something like this in such a mixed lot, but sometimes sellers don't have time to go through every item in every detail. I remember seeing one on YouTube who said that it was not worth paying an extra employee, even knowing that an occasional rarity will slip through his hands in this way.

I'll post clear pictures tonight.

It's the last year of that denomination, too.

Nice, sometimes you have to wade through a pile of ? to find a diamond. One decent coin from a bulk lot makes the whole thing worthwhile.
What? Me Worry
I agree, though in this case there were several coins that were each worth the price I paid for the whole lot. It's not the first time it happens with this seller, but this is the most spectacular so far. And of the common coins, only a farthing was below the "F" grade.

I have often gambled on bad photos and in at least 70% of the cases the gamble has paid off. So, even if I came under in about 20% of the cases (probably less actually), I win. It seems that few people are able to operate on probabilities, yet our entire lives are governed by probabilities more than certainties.

Absolutely beautiful coin!
(but for the sake of realism, the expected sale price from a coin like that isn't above 20-25 euros)

OK, thanks, Loruca. I know the values in Krause are often unrealistic. I've seen some such coins on eBay for over $100, but I suppose the sellers are using Krause because that's what they have at hand.

What catalogue do you recommend for Italy? And are there any varieties for this coin?

No varieties are known for this coin, the Gigante tends to be my go to as for catalogues, though, to be fair, ebay is excellent for pricing information, as there are high volumes of Italian kingdom coins being sold at any time and the market is rather stable.
