Additions to your collection - February 2020

January was such a good month for all of us and let's hope February is too.



Let me open with this Halfcrown - an 1823 George IV in gFine condition - lovely design
Also a worn 1845 Victoria and expecting to win a 1849 Victoria, a 1887 Victoria (EF) and If I am really lucky a hammered halfcrown of Charles I!

Got a very cheap 1000 yen NCLT (would save me a lot of search time if they all would be this reasonably priced )

and the new set of 100 yen Olympia CCs are on their way.

More Halfcrowns

These are two are more a type set and not really A coins - but make decent spacefillers


1836 William IV, better than my 1834 - but still far from ideal. This is VG/VG+ and about the best you will do for under $50 or so. Many Williams, George IVs and pre 1850 Victorias are plentiful under Fine, but VF and up are Hundreds and less economical than Georgian or Stuart coins!



A dire early head Victoria. 1845 was a fairly common year and Halfcrowns were on hiatus between 1851 and 1873 as they poured all their energy into Florins. Hence the coins before 1850 saw huge circulation until the 1870s, as the people were not eager to forget the halfcrown.

Despite Victoria's flatness - this coin is a Full Good and probably close to VG I would say G6/VG7
It is also a clean rim and complete and probably better than it looks despite the hole on her head!



Finally an affordable and much nicer coin - an Uncirculated 1962 NZ Halfcrown - common in VF and gVF - but surprisingly rare UNC.

Charles I Halfcrown Hammered (Money back if its fake - but this looks pretty real) Need to add it to the catalogue, but not until I have it and know its real. (1635/36)



A bit later but still nice and my first Anne coin. This was reasonably cheap and is definitely genuine.

Will be my last major post and buy in for a while. My partner has intimated with expensive car repairs and everything else, the coin buying spree needs to end soon.

I havent won to much stuff yet for this month. Most noteworthy are the following two medals which arrived today:
Italian medal made during the reign of King Umberto I. It was most likely made for honoring soldiers who participated in one of the many wars italy fought in africa during his reign.

And another medal made after King Umbertos assasination in the year 1900
.

I've gotten a few coins also but banknotes are easier to photograph.



Estonian markas of the 1st republic, 1919-1923.
The 100 marka note has an overprint which reads "üks kroon" meaning "one crown", Estonia switched to using krooni in the late 1920's.

German WWI occupation money, the 5mk notes are XF which is extremely hard to come by.



USSR 5 roubles 1947, the one on the left is XF-AU.

All of 4 kings of Italy were basically hopeless

VE2 - Power freak drowning in his own ego - Brutal towards Papal armies and France
U1 - Imperialistic and corrupt, uneducated - let the Mafia and Camorra control south through corrupt politicians. Unpopular with poor. Possibly his unpopularity saw half of Italy migrate!
VE3 - tried harder, but weak willed and let Mussolini walk all over him.
U2 - Homosexual and weak willed, like U1 had Dad issues and drowning in own ego - although apparently more enlightened and meant well.

Back on topic - Just one more worn coin that arrived today - cheap and for a type set of "Non British" Halfcrown coins.

Their photos not mine. Now I know my coins are looked after. 17th century and 18th century halfcrowns deserve better than a cheap PVC album and plastic bags!

His father definetely had a majestic beard too. But I would say Umbertos moustache had more mass than his fathers winglike example. VEIII had no chance against the beards of his predesessors and Umberto II didnt even try.
But serously I wouldnt judge those Kings only by their negative deeds, you can read also many positive things about them in their biographies.

Wedding medal from Monaco - Prince Albert II and his wife Charlene (Wittstock):

Bavarian medal celebrating the golden
wedding of King Ludwig III and his wife Marie Therese of austria. The medal was struck on iron during the last year of ww1 and the bavarian monarchy:

10 Soldi Parma 1815. Marie-Louise of Austria was the 2nd wife of Emperor Napoleon and became duchess of Parma during the Congress of Vienna:

Bavarian Gulden 1837 - King Ludwig I. This is a coin I wanted to have for a long time but never won one until now. The patina is not the most beautiful one but the portrait is in awesome condition:

​Sure - I will say gVF pushing EF - its a really nice coin with hardly any wear.

If it helps I paid about the same for my Hammered halfcrown ($162NZ).

Been collectionmania here. My thrift shop connection came through today, with this lot and I had to fight off a buying stamp dealer to get them.


World mix with some NZ niceies - mostly modern change, but a silver crown (Top left), a 1965 mint set of predecimals and a uncirculated 1953 crown.


Two NZ oddities, a 1871 penny token and a copper medalet given to children for the 1901 visit of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall (The future George V)

Meanwhile I seem to be attracting collection after collection lately - 3 of them, you have seen the first one and the second one is here. The third one coming next week - looks really good - lots of silver and some Roman coppers.

This one cost me only $50 and was in a PVC filled album from the 1970s, all removed and washed with hot water did wonders. It is a cheap old British collection.



It really was worth only $50 but interesting, all of the common brass 3ds, sixpences from 1926 to 1967 (Complete 1935 onwards for common dates). The silver came to around $30 in melt. One or two coins were VF.

All the halfpennies 1910 to 1967 and a few older (All very average condition)

Even funnier was an almost complete run of pennies from 1967 back to the 1860 first bun penny. No rare dates and worn. the 1967 was EF, by 1937 they are Fine, and by 1915 they are Good. Before 1894 - most of the bun pennies are worn to death with a date on them only!!

Also some UNC 5p and 10p dated 1968 to 1970 (Common).

Also got these hideous Tongan 1 and 2 pa anga coins which were cupro nickel gold plated - now they look dull brown after 50 years!!!


1968 coins with "Oil search 1969" scratched on to them. The accompanying stamp set is even more tacky. But I love tacky and kitschy issues, that coral slate covered case screams 1969 Tijuana Tom Jones, sideburns special!

My first proper ancient, a copper of Diocletian here on Numista (AD303)

Forgot to show these, a lovely 1843 farthing and my smallest coin - a bitsy maundy penny - so tiny and so cute!



Bear in mind the farthing itself looks massive next to it - imagine a penny or heaven forbid the Cartwheel tuppence next to it.

What is more bizarre is the Maundy penny is actually quite worn (gF/VF) and must have circulated for a while outside of a maundy set. The coin is a teensy 11mm in size and very fiddly.
Farthing is a good VF however I suspect the coin may have been cleaned historically - although that is some lustre too.



The Standing Liberty quarter, a better shot, since been verified as genuine and the Americans on CCF have labelled it a good AU easily worth $200US and thus paying for the whole collection twice over, one of my nicest coins. It's a type one where you can see her breasts. Women in the US demanded she cover up later in 1917 and her breasts have armour over them.

A less nice but very interesting Walker Half from 1934



Not as bad as it looks, this coin is almost Fine (VG10/F11)
