Looking at the current Numista banknote catalog, it seems German notgeld are classified by the states localities were in at the time banknotes were issued. Is there a catalog that specifies this information. I have tried to identify the states where the banknotes I have were issued but mostly I can only identify current states and am not able to identify the contemporary states at time of issue. I hate to overload the Unclassifiable section but is this what would need to be done if states cannot be identified?
Thanks, Idolenz. I had been trying the English Wikipedia entries but most give only the current state, not the earlier ones, so a place might be identified as in Saxony-Anhalt but not the earlier Saxony, Saxony Province or Anhalt. I'll have to try the German version.
And Oklahoman, I'll have to try and find Jacks catalog. No luck on information about any such catalog in a preliminary search.
A dealer called ATSNotes has an extensive list of Notgeld for sale listed by locality and indicating the larger state or other area used for classification where the locality is located although in abbreviated form. Still very helpful. http://www.atsnotes.com/notgeld/serienscheine.html
