Was Maundy coinage indented for circulation?
I am referring to a coin from 3 pence 1887.
Yes.
Is 3$ a good price for a 3 pence 1887 in a VF condition?
Yes. I would buy it if I were you (it's worth $10).
I believe maundy money was given to certain people of the parish on maundy specially it was for circulation but judging by the look of what I see in collections and on eBay were kept by the honoured person as they are almost all unc or vf ! And it's highly collectible I have a 3p somewhere but some of the higher denominations seem to fetch more !
The giving of Maundy money is a great British tradition; the money was at first handed out to the poorest members of society by the Reigning monarch or a representative of the monarch. They would have also been invited to a feast and given gifts such as clothing. Nowadays there is a welfare state to help the poor so it is given to the elderly instead.

I have a small page about them on my site Coin Wiki Maundy Money
red pouch and white pouch, forgot which one contained the coins.

maundy coinage can sometimes be found in silver recycling shops that sell, its for scrap price and some r good grades. i collected a set from those shops :D

A topic is never to old. Its a good idea going to those sorts of places to buy coins, and your rescuing them from a certain death. What do you say when you go in and ask to see their silver?

from a certain death of the melting pot! when i go into a shop like this, i usually just ask if they have coins or (yes) sometimes bills. if they say no, just say thx and walk away. if they say yes, ask to see them, if they ask you why, say you are intrested in buying them. try your best to get them at silver spot, maximun +15% for common ones but if its worth more than what your buying it for, go for it

:D

ja, it's a good way to profit, but it's only a 50/50 chance you'll get sth good..... (i have experience [creepy voice]) lol............... but this method is terribly tedious.... to get ten maundy 2 pence, it took me over 20 stores in England... if you're lucky. but you need to find the right stores (i cant help you there)
