We made it back to 1610; and I thought some of us who have since expanded their collections and had missed their chances at adding coins there might like to have a go here.
No rules for posting; it's another 'you watch out for it or you'll miss it' thread. Just has to be a coin from the next year, and try not to make it be one of the same ones from the old thread.
Anyone who wants to get the ball rolling can go and post a 2017 coin here!
Verweis : "ngdawa"Any rules about double posting or that the coin must be dated (visible date)?
I assume that two people posting the same date within a few seconds is bound to happen (race condition), given that there's no way for multiple posters to serialize their posts.
Maybe by "double posting" you meant one user posting two years back-to-back, with no intervening posts from other users? Without some limits on this, a single user could "run away" with the thread, posting many coins back-to-back.
Over at CCF, after many rules iterations, they decided to allow one year per day, allowing all posters with a coin from that year to post that day. This solves the back-to-back posting problem and also any race conditions. The problem is defining when days start and end. At CCF, they use "forum time", which is EST/EDT (GMT-5/GMT-4), since CCF is a US-based forum (based in NJ?).
At CCF, the coin must be attributable to a given year. For non-Gregorian calendars, it must be attributable to the year with greatest overlap with the Gregorian year .

This is the coin that started off the latest "How far back can we go?" thread over at CCF.
(I'm assuming that we don't have to verify that the coins we post are already in the Numista catalog?
If you own the coin and it is not on Numista then please be kind enough to add the listing and I will verify it
Just because you can't see it ... doesn't mean it isn't there - Anon.

This particular coin is already in the catalog, and I just added it to my collection (although I don't normally keep track of bullion coins (especially gold) on Numista).
However, as we go back in time, it seems that a smaller percentage of coin types are currently in the catalog. For example, I don't see Barby (presumably a German state?) or Paphlagonia (perhaps a Persian satrapy?) in the catalog at all.
I tried to participate in the last once and by the time I got a picture loaded 2 coins in a row had been posted. It would be nice to take it slow and do one year per day so everyone has a chance to participate regularly. I know it would take over a year but these pop up that frequently anyway.
We should probably start a year-per-day version on January 1, 2018. Over at CCF, they seem to go about once every two years or so (because it takes the previous thread about two years to make it to the stalling point in the 1490s), and the last one just started this year, so there isn't one scheduled for 2018.
I promise to post my 2018 coin (if I'm awake at the time). Yes, I do already have one (but missed posting it here).
For this thread, my next possible coin with a photo is 2013 (I do have coins from 2015 and 2014, but none with photos... in fact I have at least one coin from every year back to the 1860s).
Verweis : "ngdawa"So, is it one year per day or do we just post away?
It looks like we're just posting away. In order to set up a proper 1-per-day thread, we'd have to adopt a multi-part posting rule, and also adopt a midnight time zone, probably GMT.
Is there a way to search for a certain date that I own in my collection? If I put "1988" and select the "in collection" button on advanced search, it gives me all of the coins that I own that were minted in 1988, not necessarily that I own the year 1988.
I don't know if there's a way to do it or not on here, but someone else will know, but I would think if you go to the 'your coins' tab and scroll down and export your collection into an Excel file, you can then sort by year if you don't have an Excel file already of your collection.
I think we should make it an unofficial rule that so long as we're in the late 19th-20th centuries, to strive to post our 'best' coins, and wait for someone else to post if the only coin you've got for a particular year is a shabby worn piece.

Why does it matter? Everyone will be allowed to post, no matter what coin it is..but I'm sure most of us don't just post a coin from the change pile just to clear a year, so don't worry..

Hence the word unofficial, but you're probably right.

150th anniversary of Belgium's Independence (.500 silver)
Hey Cass, this is not the .500 silver issue but the silver clad copper-nickel issue. I was afraid you ticked the wrong box in your collection, but I just checked your collection and you ticked the right box.
The .500 issue is a proof coin. It's also a bit thicker than the silver clad copper-nickel issue. This you can test very easily: put a silver clad copper-nickel 500 Francs coin on the table. Lay another coin on top of this one, but a little bit over the edge. A silver clad copper-nickel will slide under the upper coin, the .500 silver won't because it's a little bit thicker.
Another way to see if it is the .500 silver coin or the silver plated coin: look at the edge. The edge of the silver plated coin has a blackish belt around the edge.
P.S. In the Comments section on that page is a link to a photo
that no longer exists - does anyone know who put it there or what
it was like so a new version can replace it?
